Tis the season of giving. I don't know about you, but this year I'm not exchanging gifts with any friends. Money is short for many, and most of us don't need a thing. But what I hope to give this season is a way to focus on the God-given gifts of family and friends, then find a way to share their riches with them. Either by letter or plain old spoken words, I intend to lift others up by sharing what I see as their gifts to this world.

I don't know if you've ever done this. I have. The results have been mixed. But I will share that I once told a girlfriend what I thought her gifts were, and she was blown away, denied them, and could hardly believe her ears, repeatedly saying, "Really?" I took tremendous pleasure in doing so because I would bet dollars to sugar cookies that she still remembers what I said. Pleasant words spoken gently may be the best gifts given this season.

As many of you know, I spend some of my free time visiting my FIL in an Alzheimer's care facility, and Dad in his home where he's fortunate to remain at this stage in his life. I continue to find this stage in life fascinating because it forces me to consider what my life might be like when I'm in my 80s, if I live that long. This is one of the pieces that makes me live life to the fullest because I don't know what lies ahead.
