Yesterday i decided to goof off and maybe look for a part time job on my outing. I accidently(?) drove past the place that I was interested in applying to and thought I would check it out on my way back. I was on my way to the Salvation Army to buy what else, books. I almost changed my mind about going there, too. It was just one of my get in the car and see where it takes me days.

When I was going in to the Salvation Army store, I noticed a "Hiring" sign in the window. I made out the application and have an interview at 10 this morning.

I am excited about working there as it is part time, totally stress free and I will meet a lot of nice people for sure. They want a cashier( Yes, I can make change ) and I think this would be exactly what I need right now.

Wish me luck and say a little prayer that my interview goes well.

I will post as soon as I get back.
Now...what to wear?

Go early Chick and buy something to wear...Got my fingers crossed!

I love going thru the treasures they have there. I have even found an antique a time or two at the local ones here.

Let us know how it goes!

I see lots of goodies in your future! HA. Be careful not to spend your check before leaving work. Congrats.

I have a friend who volunteers at several second- hand shops. You can't imagine her good finds. One person's trash is surely another's treasure.

Hi Ladies,

Thank you for all your encouraging posts. My first day was simply wonderful. My co-workers are very friendly and have a team like attitude. I felt like I was shopping as I straightened out the books or fixed clothes on hangers.

I thought about you guys more than once during the day. I realized how important you all are to me when it comes to sharing my little everyday experiences. Aren't we a great circle of friends?

Chick ... congrats on the job.

I don't think my husband would let me work at a second-hand shop ... he knows I'd spend more than I made. LOL

The other neat thing, I think, is that you're working somewhere that makes a difference in others' lives. I know my daughter couldn't clothe my two grandkids without the Salvation Army store.

I remember commenting on a friend's outfit (her husband is/was an officer in the Army). Anyway, she thanked me and when I asked where she got it, she said, "Sally Ann's," with a big grin on her face. I was confused ... then she told me she got it at the Salvation Army but lots of folks just call it Sally Ann's.

Anyway, have fun.

Hugs and blessings, Francine

Francine, I was born in a Salvation Army home for unwed Mother's. They my dear Mother's saving grace back then.

When I was raising my children without "anymoney" my word for alimony, we had a christmas that wouldn't take place without the Sally Ann. My girls and I remember it as our best Christmas ever, ages 1 and 5(We made handmade ornaments, that we still have.)We had our first Christmas with Peace in our new home. Santa was compliments of SA.

The money from our store goes to help people who are serious about giving up drugs/alcohol. My job is fulfilling.

Chick,

This is awesome! I have toyed with the idea of working at a Thrift Store. It just seems that the older I get the more simplicity I want, and as little stress as possible.

Sometimes, I tell people that I am 42 years old and I still do not know what I want to be when I grow up. LOL!

We have a Thrift Store here, CHKD (Children's Hospital of the Kings Dauthers), I like going there and the proceeds do go to the hospital and the children benefit. We have also have a "Sally Ann", and well, I like going there too.

Here is another thing I like about Thrift Stores, if you are a crafty person, there is no limit to what your imagination can find. When I sold Cosmetics, that is where I bought my baskets, in order to make gift baskets. I remember once at the Salvation Army store, this woman was trying to sort a large supply of jewelry. I walked up to the counter and asked her if I can take a look? Then I just told her that I would give them $5.00 for the entire bag. She sold it to me, I still have some left, and I have been able to make some other jewelry with it. Simple stuff, nothing elaborate.

Anyway Chick, thanks for sharing your experience. I may just look into that as well.

Love and Hugs,
Cathi

Another thing that I wanted to add. There must be some kind of kindred spirit going on here.

Last week, I really wanted to get out of the house. Then I thought, what will I do?

One thought kept coming to my mind. Just get in the car and go. Over and over again. I haven't done that yet, but I did have other things last week to occupy me. Good idea!

Just get in the car and go!

Love and Hugs,
Cathi

Francine, Sally Ann's is what we called it to. I can see how many people it helps just in my first week there.

Chatty, I think you have struck a goldmine with your idea. I was planning on doing it but this job came up. What is your next step when you get more work than you can handle? Contract it out?

Danita, I got paid yesterday for 2 days work (my day off) and went there shopping. They charged me 2.25 for my box of goodies. I looked at my boss and said, "Can't you beat that just a little bit?" We laughed so hard.
She is a gem, a genuine down to earth lady and we get along fabulously.

Cathi, have you done it yet?

Katrinka, Thanks. My goody box? Books, books boo...well you get it.

This post is so timely. I visited one that's run by a local church just last week. I have a passion for anything tartan plaid. I found a comforter (reversible), with curtains, sham, and bedskirt. Five bucks. It was a half-bed size, but I mainly wanted the bedskirt and sham, the rest of the items were a bonus. FIVE BUCKS! I intend to use them all and will probably just fold and lay the comforter across the foot of my bed. Picture this: crisp white sheets, a GREEN plaid lower bedskirt with the tartan plaid RED one above it (ruffle effect) and white battenburg inbetween for bedskirts, (three layers) then the comforter AND my red and white quilt at the foot of the bed...(Antique high poster bed) and thennnnn, an assortment of red pillows, white pillows, and of course my tartan plaid one! I haven't put it all together yet, but talk about playing! I love it. All because of Sally Ann's.

And of course I bought 10 books. HAhahahaha...

JJ, Tartan? Are you sure your not part Newfie? Our provincial tartan was developed in 1955 and is predominantly green with gold, white, brown and red bands of colour. It corresponds with "The Ode to Newfoundland," our official provincial anthem.
I will get you something tartan when I visit again. It is truly beautiful.

Your bed decor sounds so inviting. What? This week-end? Sorry, got to clean the moat. [Frown]

Oh that would be sooo cool if you could. Let me know ahead of time and I'll send moola (if I'm working) and have you get me a nice scarf...wouldn't a lampshade set it off? Or a jigsaw puzzle with tartan in it? What I dearly love and can never find is wrapping paper in the RED/GREEN tartan plaid.

JJ, I will "contact my contacts" in Newfoundland. I will put them on an Island wide alert for "Tartan stuff like you mentioned." 'Course I will have an eye open at Sally Ann's too.

Guess what you're getting for Christmas?
Wrapping paper, ha ha. Couldn't resist.

The Queen of Hearts ate some tarts, no, no I mean...The Queen of smarten wants some tarten...

(sigh) and I really wanted to make a funny.
I guess I'll have to leave the humor to you...dang it.

Just send a blank check...I can fill it out for you. No?

JK, no charge.

Cathi, have you done it yet?

Chick, yes I went to CHKD on Friday, and asked if they had any positions open. The lady, come to think of it, didn't give me an answer, LOL. She did ask me if I wanted an application, and then went on to inform me that they are always experiencing a turnover. I asked why? She then told me that most of them are young girls that are looking for something "better". Okay, that put me at ease a bit. The word turnover is usually a red flag to me. However, before she gave me an answer, that is what I had suspected, wheww!

So I am going to turn this application in on Tuesday and see what happens. Seriously, I always end up sorting through stuff at home, I might as well get paid for it, LOL.

I'll let you all know what happens. Really Chick, thanks for letting us know your experience.

Cheers,
Cathi

I'll keep you posted, if it doesn't work, I'll go and try somewhere else.

Oh and BTW, my friends and I refer to Thrift Stores as Boutiques. "Hi, would you like to go to the Boutiques today?"

I have an update. I went to CHKD and turned in my application. The lady that gave it to me last week was there. She introduced me to the Asst. Manager, and told her that I was applying for Asst. Manager. The Asst. Manager said good. I said whoa, I will be happy to take a position as a cashier or sorting inventory.

Anyway, this lady told me that she was glad that I came back with the application and the Asst. Manager told me that she was leaving in two weeks.

I really hope that someone else wants this Asst. Managers position, and then the other job would be open and I would be glad to take that.

I just want something simple. I'll let you all know what happens.

Cheers,

Cathi,
I think this is so cool and I'm thinking I might try the same thing. We have lots of them in the area. Why not? Let us know WHEN you start and then tell us all about it. I wish I could visit them all across the states. Wouldn't that be cool? I see a book in the making here...hm. I just can't seem to get it out of my system (travling across the U.S.)

Chick I just except a couple jobs at a time right now, never more than I can handle. I suppose if i wanted to grow into a large business I could but the idea is not to have to open an office and have help. Sometimes less is better...at least for me. [Big Grin]

Hi Boomer Comrades,

I have an update. Well, I went to the thrift store several times, and I was told by the manager that she didn't have time yet to go over applications. Then 2 weeks ago, she called me and told me that she needed an Asst. Manager, of course, I was looking for a more simple type job. Anyway, I talked to her and she said that she needed to get more organized and that she would call me.

In the meantime, 3 weeks ago, I applied for a data entry job at www.tns-mi.com. A friend of mine works there and told me that they had some positions opened, so she turned in my resume. Well, they called me earlier this week and I had my interview on Tuesday, and they offered me the job on Friday (yesterday). Later on, yesterday I received a message from the thrift store wanting me to start immediately.

Isn't it funny how things work out that way? [Roll Eyes]

Well, because TNS is more organized and offers great benefits, and data entry is second nature to me, I am going there. Not to mention the fact that it is an 8-5, Monday thru Friday schedule.

So, that is my update, I start work on Monday Aug 22. Another thing I liked was that they gave me sometime to sort things out at home before I started working there.

Plus, I want to use my brain to work on my other life's dream, my project on writing about my experience living and growing up on the Greek Isles.

Thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement. Chick thanks for starting this post to begin with. It was the motivation that I needed to get going.

Cheers,
Cathi
