Chick,
That is sooo cool. A job in a thrift store - that would be my dream job! (lol) Except I'm sure I would spend my wages on books and such!
happy shopping! (I mean working!)lol danita

Chick,
This is awesome! I have toyed with the idea of working at a Thrift Store. It just seems that the older I get the more simplicity I want, and as little stress as possible.
Sometimes, I tell people that I am 42 years old and I still do not know what I want to be when I grow up. LOL!
We have a Thrift Store here, CHKD (Children's Hospital of the Kings Dauthers), I like going there and the proceeds do go to the hospital and the children benefit. We have also have a "Sally Ann", and well, I like going there too.
Here is another thing I like about Thrift Stores, if you are a crafty person, there is no limit to what your imagination can find. When I sold Cosmetics, that is where I bought my baskets, in order to make gift baskets. I remember once at the Salvation Army store, this woman was trying to sort a large supply of jewelry. I walked up to the counter and asked her if I can take a look? Then I just told her that I would give them $5.00 for the entire bag. She sold it to me, I still have some left, and I have been able to make some other jewelry with it. Simple stuff, nothing elaborate.
Anyway Chick, thanks for sharing your experience. I may just look into that as well.
Love and Hugs, Cathi

Chick, this is so awesome for you! The way you were led there! Amazing! You said a John Denver look alike interviewed you. Girlfriends, go to Vi's web site and see her art: she did a rendition of John Denver that is wonderful! Love and Light, Lynn

Francine, Sally Ann's is what we called it to. I can see how many people it helps just in my first week there. Chatty, I think you have struck a goldmine with your idea. I was planning on doing it but this job came up. What is your next step when you get more work than you can handle? Contract it out?
Danita, I got paid yesterday for 2 days work (my day off) and went there shopping. They charged me 2.25 for my box of goodies. I looked at my boss and said, "Can't you beat that just a little bit?" We laughed so hard. She is a gem, a genuine down to earth lady and we get along fabulously.
Cathi, have you done it yet?
Katrinka, Thanks. My goody box? Books, books boo...well you get it.

This post is so timely. I visited one that's run by a local church just last week. I have a passion for anything tartan plaid. I found a comforter (reversible), with curtains, sham, and bedskirt. Five bucks. It was a half-bed size, but I mainly wanted the bedskirt and sham, the rest of the items were a bonus. FIVE BUCKS! I intend to use them all and will probably just fold and lay the comforter across the foot of my bed. Picture this: crisp white sheets, a GREEN plaid lower bedskirt with the tartan plaid RED one above it (ruffle effect) and white battenburg inbetween for bedskirts, (three layers) then the comforter AND my red and white quilt at the foot of the bed...(Antique high poster bed) and thennnnn, an assortment of red pillows, white pillows, and of course my tartan plaid one! I haven't put it all together yet, but talk about playing! I love it. All because of Sally Ann's.
And of course I bought 10 books. HAhahahaha...

JJ, Tartan? Are you sure your not part Newfie? Our provincial tartan was developed in 1955 and is predominantly green with gold, white, brown and red bands of colour. It corresponds with "The Ode to Newfoundland," our official provincial anthem. I will get you something tartan when I visit again. It is truly beautiful. Your bed decor sounds so inviting. What? This week-end? Sorry, got to clean the moat. chick

Chick, yes I went to CHKD on Friday, and asked if they had any positions open. The lady, come to think of it, didn't give me an answer, LOL. She did ask me if I wanted an application, and then went on to inform me that they are always experiencing a turnover. I asked why? She then told me that most of them are young girls that are looking for something "better". Okay, that put me at ease a bit. The word turnover is usually a red flag to me. However, before she gave me an answer, that is what I had suspected, wheww!
So I am going to turn this application in on Tuesday and see what happens. Seriously, I always end up sorting through stuff at home, I might as well get paid for it, LOL.
I'll let you all know what happens. Really Chick, thanks for letting us know your experience.
Cheers, Cathi

Hi Boomer Comrades, I have an update. Well, I went to the thrift store several times, and I was told by the manager that she didn't have time yet to go over applications. Then 2 weeks ago, she called me and told me that she needed an Asst. Manager, of course, I was looking for a more simple type job. Anyway, I talked to her and she said that she needed to get more organized and that she would call me. In the meantime, 3 weeks ago, I applied for a data entry job at www.tns-mi.com. A friend of mine works there and told me that they had some positions opened, so she turned in my resume. Well, they called me earlier this week and I had my interview on Tuesday, and they offered me the job on Friday (yesterday). Later on, yesterday I received a message from the thrift store wanting me to start immediately. Isn't it funny how things work out that way? Well, because TNS is more organized and offers great benefits, and data entry is second nature to me, I am going there. Not to mention the fact that it is an 8-5, Monday thru Friday schedule. So, that is my update, I start work on Monday Aug 22. Another thing I liked was that they gave me sometime to sort things out at home before I started working there. Plus, I want to use my brain to work on my other life's dream, my project on writing about my experience living and growing up on the Greek Isles. Thanks to all of you for your support and encouragement. Chick thanks for starting this post to begin with. It was the motivation that I needed to get going. Cheers, Cathi
