I'm loving every sentence in "All Over But the SHoutin'" by Rick Bragg. It's hard to believe that he's roughly my age - he does such a great job of capturing another time and place. If you've not sat down and started the book just yet - do yourself a favor and do it. It's very very good.

I couldn't agree more Julie...While reading I am constantly amazed that someone who was raised in the kind of poverty he was can write so wonderfully. His descriptions of every thing, situation and place are reason enough for a pulitzer...

But...it's still depressing. However, this was real life and not every book can make you grin. Some make you face what is...or in his case, what was. Onward!

I agree too.....he may have started out "roughly" in his life but he certainly can write a great book! It is depressing, but life is often that way even if we pretend it isn't sometimes. He's a remarkable writer though and I have a LOT more to read so plan to hit it again tonight.....

The other Julie is from the states. SHe's a writer and her first book is being publisher by Beyond Words in November! [Wink]

I'm still reading All Over but the Shoutin.

Did you notice that all it took was one person to discover his talent and help turn his life around? [Big Grin]

Wouldn't you love to be that one person for others? [Wink]

Beyond Words Publishing? That my editor's publisher too. Her book was released this month. Small world.

Speaking of books, I've been reading, All that Glitters. It's about the young boy Michael Jackson molested back in the 90's. It's written by a family member. What surprised me is the errors in the book. Maybe because I'm a writer I notice it more but I'm always shocked when I find things like that in a book that was spoken about on The Today Show. Just a thought.

I finished the book and absolutely loved it. I found many facets to this book:

Not in any order...

How one's childhood can become a tremendous part of our adult life.

Getting over past humiliations and ghosts.

Understanding the life of a writer for a big publication

Grasping the deep love one has for family.

What alcohol can do when flung lose in a family.

What poverty as a result of alcoholism does to a family.

How deep the love of family roots itself regardless of our upbringing.

A mother's love never ends. Nor does a son's love end.

What else?

I know the book is a little depressing, but there is such hope in his story.

I find it hard to believe the writer is my age and had such a tragic upbringing. That's one of the reasons I love to read. It opens my eyes to different circumstances in my midst...to which I'm otherwise oblivious.

Sharing stories...that's what it's all about.

I'm about a three fourths of the way through the book. Its really interesting. I love the way he writes.
Yes, its depressing but so true as I've heard some similar stories lately that just break your heart.

Dotsie I agree with all of your "observations" regarding Rick's book. I finished reading it last night.....he really is an extraordinary writer and teller of stories. Life is a combination of good and bad experiences and it's how we make it through the ups and downs that add depth to our lives and frame our future.

I'd say he did a remarkable job of turning the negatives into positives....and that's no small feat.

This was an enjoyable read!

I am SO happy that you all read my favorite book! Isn't he just wonderful!? And the other things he's written all sound the same way too, matter of fact, with his drawl.....I love that he's casual, matter-of-fact and poignantly painful in parts. You can feel, smell and taste everything that he writes about.

I'm 3/4 way finished reading and intend to finish it today. He is simply remarkable. His book is akin to a car wreck (to me). You look, but you know you don't want to, but you look anyway. Same with his book...the poverty, the acoholism, etc...you read, but you don't really want to know that people suffered so much. But you read anyway.

And you are changed by it. As someone pointed out, it opens your eyes.

I am very proud that this writer came from my home state. No, it doesn't make ME any smarter or a better writer, but it's still nice to hear of positive things coming from home.

I finished the book a couple days ago and loved it. His writing is remarkable and I thoroughly enjoyed the read. I couldn't help but feel that Rick has always felt cheated by life and I don't think he will ever completely shake that feeling.

I also just finished reading another book (since yesterday) called The Notebook, by Nicholas Sparks. Undoubtedly the WORST book I've ever read. I kept reading it thinking it would get better. I was, to put it midly, just another love story and not even written well. Do not waste your money...and more importantly, your time. Not even believable...

strong message to follow...

JJ
