Hello all. I am a post-menopausal 55-year-old mother of eight, grandmother of 18 and a writer on the topic of child abuse. I also write poetry. I have four web sites that I try to keep up with now that the children are all grown and on their own! I live in the country on a dirt road, away from people. Although I am out going on here, I am rather shy in person. I find poetry gives me a way to share my feelings and experiences, and helps me heal. As a child abuse survivor, it has taken me over 30 years to find the courage to speak out against child abuse. In 1999 I began writing aarticles on topics related to child abuse and have met thousands of survivors in every part of the world. One thing I find we all have in common, is a desire to reach out to other survivors and let them know they are not alone. I belong to so many differnt sites that I may not be able to visit here a lot, but I'll try to check in once a week to keep up. I look forward to meeting other writers and boomers who are looking for a friend in Ohio.

I went to your website and was very touched. You did a wonderful job
Thank you Meridith. That means a lot coming from a Poet Laureate! My poetry can be seen at two sites:
The Word Charmer's Poetry http://www.geocities.com/wordcharmer101/
The Sacred Circle http://www.suite101.com/myhome.cfm/thesacredcircle
I self-published my first collection of poetry two years ago.
"A Treasury of Inspirational Poetry" http://www.virtualbookworm.com/gatheringpearls.html
I am still trying to get my children's poetry published. I did win a children's humorous poetry contest and was published in the book, "I Invited A Dragon To Dinner" from Penguin Putnam.
Again, thank you for the warm welcome. Thanks to Nikki and chickadee also.

Cageed Bird, I sent you an email and visited your site. Good to know others from Ohio.
Dotsie, I created the name wordcharmer because I pictured myself like a snake charmer, only as a poet trying to coax the words out! Lol!
I've been online since 1999 and have 4 sites, so I have learned how to maneuver my way around, but I just figured out how to reply without quoting!
I'll tell you about the kids here if that's ok. That way I won't get lost, since sometimes I don't know if I'm going up the stairs or down! Lol!
My husband and I each have 4 children. We raised them together for ten years until they all grew up, and it certainly was not easy! Lol! We have 5 girls and three boys, the youngest, a girl, just turned 26 and the oldest, my son, is 37. The grandchildren range in age from 1 year to 16 years old. Oh...and one more grandchild is due in July which will make 19. Makes for a lot of fun at family gatherings.
It's nice to find a place where you truly feel welcome. Thank you all.

Wordcharmer, I love your name, and you beat me on grandchildren! I have 12, but have two kids probably not finished with their families yet. My kids are scattered, I have 4 (2 seperate families) in towns near me, another 4 of one family about 45 minutes away, 2 in Germany and 2 in San Diego. How do you handle Christmas and Birthday gifts? I just retired and know I won't be able to spend what I would LOVE to spend on each of my darlings. Looking for some hints or ideas.
Welcome to the site, it's a great one!
Sherri

DonnaJ-Thank you! Dotsie-They all live within 20 miles from us! Sherri-12 grandchildren are just as much fun as 18! As for gifts, we spend $15 on each right now. But like you, it will get tougher when my husband retires for sure! So I suggest spending a day doing something each child would love to do. It doesn't have to cost anything except time and maybe a picnic lunch. For instance-I take a few of them to the river where we spend the day wading and searching for crawdads. Then we have a picnic, sing silly songs or just talk. Get creative! If one enjoys reading, spend the day at the library or a book store. Maybe another likes to fly kites or play games. The gift is in the quality time you spend with each child. I think they will remember these special days even more than a gift. Hope that helps! Diane-Another Ohioan! Wonderful! Hope to get to meet Lynn soon too. You have all been so nice! I love this place! Have to go do housework! Yuck! Talk later.

Thank you chatty lady! That is awesome that your grandson remembers! My two oldest granddaughters who are 15 and 16, still remember our teddy bear tea parties, complete with old fashioned long dresses, jewels, hats, bows and crumpets, (cupcakes!) I took pictures then and they are prized possessions now.

Hi Wordcharmer, wow, what a lot of kids! You have a large family. I have no children, so to hear that you raised 8 and have 19 grands sounds like a lot ot me. I am also a survivor. I will visit your sites soon. Less than a week ago, I told the BWS that I had to curtail my site activities so that I can concentrate on writing my next memoir. Well, I can't stay away from this group of women! They are all so wonderful and supportive. You will be glad that you're here too! Welcome! I'm happy you found us. Love and Light, Lynn

Hi Lynn. I am glad there are other survivors here. Can't wait to look at your sites and get to know everyone. If I forget names or miss someone's responses, please forgive me. I'll try to reply to everyone. I can't stay away either. I think this site is my new favorite!
Blessings!

There you go Meridith! Lol! At heart, I am a tarheel, born in Lenoir North Carolina in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. If I were rich, that's where I would live now.
