I was invited to participate in a widows auction next weekend at a sister church. There will be dancing, refreshments and a time to get acquainted with the man who bids for you. Then he is suppose to ask for a date for another time. I said NO, as I was still recouperating, besides I've seen most of the men there, blah!!! I am old in number only, not in looks or style or in my thinking, and these men, poor dears, look like relics about to topple over in a heap.

Good grief! Do they think just because we're widowed that we're desperate? I say tell them no, we're too busy being fabulous to resort to such nonsense.

I find it comical that a church is sponosring this. What a hot.

Does each man really bid on the women? I've never heard of such a thing. Does the gal go to the highest bidder? And let me guess, the money goes to charity?

Each woman makes a picnic basket and the men bid on the baskets supposedly. Then the two join the rest for a nice big picnic together. It's fun, a sociable event and yes the money goes to stock the church's pantry for the many poor they feed.

This sort of bidding has been going for years and years. If you ever saw the movie, "Coal Miner's Daughter," Moony Lynn bid on Lauretta Webb. These picnic socials are older than the hills. I guess I'd be fun, if you were younger and lack the wisdom that comes with age.

It's still fun even being an event as old as the hills. Plus the money raised fills the pantry of the church, plus some, every year.

I was told by one of the men that they always bid on the fluffy womens baskets first because fluffy women eat good and always have the best tasting food in their baskets, and plenty of it...

I'll bet that's true about fluffy women eating good. I'll bet
they're the best cooks in the world. And I know this tradition
has to be a ton of fun. Churches around here, feed thousands of
people during the Holidays and throughout the year.

Most of the fund raisers in these parts are chicken barbecues; or straight donations. Many of our churches have food pantries
and local citizens keep 'em stocked.
