There are so many great threads going now, I didn't want to cover any so put this here. It is SNOWING like crazy here in Las Vegas right now, and we have a couple inches on the ground. I never thought I would see this day. Oh, we've had flurries but nothing ever stayed on the warm ground but a minute or two.

It has been snowing an hour now and it is sticking to everything. The Casinos look so strange and the palm trees all covered with snow.

Dancing Dolphin posted elsewere in here that California is blanketed as well with the cold, wet, white stuff. Now let me see, where did I put my boots 23 years ago, when I moved here to the desert???? LOL!

That's mind-boggling, Chatty! It's normal for us, but to hear that your corner of the world is also getting it is unbelievable! If we could get out of our driveway, I'd go right to the post office and send you a pair of long johns!

chatty, what's the temp? Make sure you take photos of the palm trees with snow. I bet that's quite a site.

Eagle, are you getting snow too?

I think I'll start a post about the weather in our towns. It's neat to hear how we're all experiencing different temps and weather conditions.

chatty, do they even sell snow boots in Vegas?

Sure they do, don't forget just 40 miles up and out of town are two gorgeous ski resorts. I just haven't taken my boots out for literally years. The temperature is 44* right now and still snowing, at 5:15 p.m. and its going down to 35* tonight according to the weather people. My furnace is running nonstop and I have it set for 65*...

Well I have to admit Chickadee, it does kind of but these desert drivers out here act like they never saw wet roads before even when it just rains, let alone ice or snow, so imagine the mess out here already. Many fender benders and many more to come, I fear. Me, I'm sticking close to home. I'll admire the white wonderland from inside where is dry, safe and warm

That is wild Chatty - I read back in August the Farmer's Almanac Predictions, and the almanac which gives 08 and 09 predictions of weather, said we will have a colder than normal winter this year for the whole country, and they say the almanac is usually 80 to 85% accurate, so I guess we should all pull out the long johns - LOL - even me here in Florida and I have experienced more than 7 days with below freezing temps at late night lows, and that's more than all last winter and winter hasn't even really started - can't wait to see what it will be like in mid-January...

Jackie, I am a firm believer of The Farmers Almanac predictions, they are usually 95% accurate. Whoa is me, or whoa for us all actually, yet to see what the winter has in store for us all.

Could this be "The Day After Tomorrow"????? Here in Colorado we are experiencing extremely cold temps! I know that each year is different. On Monday we had a HIGH of 8! Definitely not normal. This coming weekend will be extremely COLD! We may reach a high of 22 on Saturday and a high of 8 on Sunday! Needless to say we will be hibernating and spending the weekend in. Housecleaning. smile
Our DD and SIL will be coming in for the Holidays on Wed. They didn't come home for the holidays last year so we are so excited this year! I want wonderful weather while they are here. I get so nervous when they travel. Yes I know THEY ARE ADULTS! I just get the Mommy Lion Syndrome. grin
I hope if you are expecting incoming guests they all arrive safely.

Did you see the Vegas snow storm on the nightly news? This is the worst storm for over a century according to the weather people. Its still snowing and the ground is blanketed with the wet, white stuff as well as anything else it hits. Looking for even more tomorrow too. They closed route 95 the major highway between California and Nevada and also some pass in the mountains, so there are trucks all over the place waitring to be able to get through. All planes were grounded and there are over 800 people stranded at the airport here, not to mention the ones who drove in. Will keep you posted...

Woke up today to water, water everywhere and none you'd want to drink, LOL!!! They now say the snow has ended and it will be cold in the 40's but no further white stuff. The sun has returned at least so far today. It may rain next Monday...How do they know that so far in advance anyway???
I am not sorry to see the sloshy stuff disappear.

Going to a Christmas party/luncheon at 3:00 p.m today and have new suede shoes, not good in water or snow.

Chatty did u make a snow woman? Have fun at the party.
No snow here yet but it's cold enough at times to freeze the balls off a pooltable.

Nope Chickadee, not a snowman in sight, BUT hear ye, hear ye, I met a man at the luncheon today. He has lived in the same resort for eight months and is single from New York. Tall, slender, blue eyes, grey hair and plentry of it too, and he was polite and very friendly.

I walked into the hall and found a table, sat down for about ten minutes and noticed him sitting on a sofa looking my way. Finally he got up, came over and said, "are you here alone?" I said, "Yes, so far anyhow." He asked if he could keep me company? I said, "sure!" So he and I spent the afternoon talking and he waited on me, getting napkins, soda pop, more of everything served and we had fun. Two other people joined our table and we had a lovely time. He asked if he could call me. I gave him my business card, so we'll see. NO big deal but it was fun being flirted with by a nice looking man my age...

Like my dear sainted mother (LOL) always said, when you stop looking BAM, fate hits you right between the eyes.

That's exactly right Chatty, the minute you stop looking for that special one, they come to you more quickly - it's almost like when we worry or obsess or maybe LOL come across as desperately seeking susans, fate closes us off from meeting or being open to the right one, but when we relax then we are open to new opportunities or new people...

I've seen where different parts of the country are getting crazy snow storms. Ijust hope everyone will make it home for Christmas.

The weather in Baltimore is so all over the place. One days it's in the 20s and then a couple days later, it mid-50s and sunny. I much prefer this to all cold weather. The older I get, the less I like the cold. I can see why people retire to warmer temps.

How many have people traveling to your home for the holidays? We have one son coming from NY, but that shouldn't be a problem.

chatty, was this a party where you live? And if so, does he live in your neighborhood? Looking forward to the unfolding story. I bet you were reveling in being waited on. You go girl!

Yes Dotsie, it was the Christmas party for the resort where I live. And yes he has lived here now for about eight months, moved here from New York, a retired broker of some sort. Not sure there will be a story to tell, I am not looking for a relationship and he seems to be, but yep, enjoyed all the attention he gave me at the party.

Called a friend today to see what was up and she was out in the driveway shovewling ice and snow. It hadn't melted in Henderson, up her way yet. Imagine that! Its still cold as a witches tit, near 38* but the warm sun is shining brightly...

Every other day we get a storm; the snow's being measured
not in inches but feet. What's up with that? I know. I
know. Those are the hazards of living in New York State.
But still...

Here are some pics from our recent storm. We ended up with almost 4' of snow at my house. That's me, trying to stay warm and smile at the same time:

We only have a tiny market up here in the village, so I normally go to this grocery store. They are at a lower elevation, so they were not prepared for snow. I believe they had 2 feet, and the parking lot was a mess. You can see some cars that are still buried:

I took this one through my windshield on the way to the store. There's snow as far as the eye can see. If you travel another 150 miles north beyond the farthest cloud, that's where Chatty lives. She's in Vegas and they got 3" of snow:

Amazingt Danmcing Dolphin, you have a lovely looking home by the way.

Vegas is pretty dry in most places again, but the wet heavy snow did a lot of damage to places not able to hold the weight of it.

Louisa I am jumping with joy to see you back posting again, you were so missed young lady, LOL!!!

Dancing Dolphin,
You are one pretty lady, lady. These storms this year are
really, really weird. There's another one coming this way, today;
and the city is still digging out from Friday's storm. Geese...
Loved the pictures by the way. Both yours and Louisa's up there in MA.

Jabber, we must be getting hit with the same weather systems! It's snowing here again today; we were supposed to spend the day with our grandchildren, but nobody's going anywhere today. It's turning into a blizzard out there, a good day to stay in, wrap a warm blanket around the shoulders and cosy up to the BWS hearth with a big cup of hot chocolate.

I love seeing Dancing Dolphin and Louisa in your snowy landscape. I'm jealous! We had snow, but yesterday the rain melted it all away.

Yes, Chatty, I agree, Dolphin's house looks lovely. And I know how Louisa's gorgeous terrace looks with its view over the bay. Your Chirstmas tree looks beautiful Louisa. Gosh you made that snowman just from the snow on your terrace?! I'm so happy you are posting again too.

Our tree is losing it's needles faster than I can say Christmas. By the time New Year rolls around, we'll have to send it to a nudist camp. haha

Awesome photos! We got a foot of windy snow yesterday and the wind chill was -15 degrees....what a mess. I was out moving cars in this blizzard so Frank could plow. We were still trying to dig out from Friday's storm!...I'm really not into it so why do I still live here????

Many roads and even towns are closed around here today. We currently have a blizzard. Windchill makes it negative degrees out there. We have a fire going in the fireplace. The thruway is closed from here to the Pennsylvania State Line. The only other time it was like this was during the Blizzard of '77. Some roads were closed about a week back then. My dog's having a fit; Xena can't go for her normal walk in the park. I have four layers of clothing on top; tights, long johns, and a blanket on my lower torso. Geese! You'd think I was in Alaska or the North Pole, for cryin' out loud! Hey, it's fun to vent!!!

As frustrating as all this snow is for us housebound folks, I'm really feeling for the thousands of people stuck in airports across Canada and parts of the US. Some people have already been stuck for a couple of days and can't get a flight out before Thursday (Christmas Day).

Yes indeed. Another storm is headed this way. So I'd better get
to the store while I can. Company is comin' and I need more supplies. A new wave of snow, wind and/or rain beginning tonight and on into tomorrow is on its way. Been hit by so many storms lately, it's becoming funny. Might as well laugh. Nothing else does any good anyway!

And you gals are right: I'd rather be here than stuck
in an airport or somewhere far from home!

After sitting here reading this thread, I must say that I will not be complaining about our 80 degree weather even if it's almost 10 degrees warmer than usual. The pictures are beautiful but I really can do without the snow.

I am glad you all can still smile while inundated with snow and cold weather. God bless all of you.

I am now happy again to be in my little corner of warmth in the US. My a/c is running and I'm baking cookies and that's christmas here for us in central florida.

Sandpiper, I have to admit being especially envious of your Florida tonight...my brother and his family are there for 10 days, not far from Kissimmee, celebrating Christmas in Florida tonight. While the warmth would be welcome, it's his presence I yearn for (I haven't seen him since our other brother died in March 2007; we used to be such a close-knit family before then). But I'm so happy for him, I think it's his first vacation in many years.

I feel sorry for the folks who wasted their money to come to Vegas to get away from the bad weather where they live, only to find, wet, very cold in the 30's, winds about 40 mph, and NO sunshine whatsoever...

It's raining here today. I would love to spend Christmas in
Florida. Weathermen say this area's temps will break
records for being the warmest ever. A few days ago it was so
cold, I could not get warm. Go figure!

today is the 27th of December...and at 7:30 p.m. I sat on my front porch sipping coffee in the swing with Molly at my feet...I had on my summer PJ's enjoying the perfect temperature, darkness and quiet. EGADS!!!! It's winter!!! Where's the snow???? Where's the cold temperatures? It's 74 degress for goodness sakes!! Sheesh. That's what I get for living in southern Alabama. I miss the snow this time of year.

Come on up here, Dee! There's plenty of snow here. Everywhere. But bring your skates. The roads and sidewalks are like skating rinks tonight, sheer ice as far as the eye can see.

It was 62 degrees at 6:30 a.m. here today. Two days ago we had
three feet of snow. Tonight they say it'll be 40 something and may snow. Good grief! Many folks in this area have colds and
infections they cannot get rid of. One day it's hot. The next day
it's cold. Right now it is windy and dark and rainy. The neighbor's 70 foot pine has fallen across their yard. Another
oak tree fell in their backyard. Geese! I'm afraid the electric
lines will blow down. At various times these past couple of years, some folks have been without electricity for weeks on end. That's scary! When I was a kid, we had winter [snow and cold] from October to March. Now it comes and goes throughout
those months. You can't count on anything anymore! LOL...

Its 50* here today under sunny skies, but goes down into the low 30's at night. I have lived here now for over 23 years and have never seen it so cold and winter like. Where is all the global warming? It this keeps up, the Vegans will be leaving here for the winters for a warmer climate. LOL!

Jabber...egads! Falling trees...sounds like around here during Hurricane season.

Chatty...I always heart Las Vegas had two types of weather in a 24 hour period...

YOu hear right for the most part Dee. Remember the old western movies where the men would be walking along their horses, covered in sweat and dying of the heat and thirst....THEN.....the night time of that same day, they'd be huddled around a blazing fire in a heavy jacket about to freeze?

Its hardly like that here in town but still can be out on the desert floor. Its just that most cold weather people came here to get away from winters biting cold, snowy weather and now we are having it too. Very weird!!

I'm jealous! The mountains got up to about mid-40's today. We went to the local bar and grill and sat out in their deck in the sun. Sure didn't feel that cold.

We're heading down to the beach tomorrow to get some warmer air. Should be in the 60's at the beach, maybe 70 inland.

I'm staying warm right now because I'm working at my computer with a puppy on my lap. Her name is Gracie, and she's a tiny beagle puppy that we are baby-sitting for my son and his wife. I'll post pics from Christmas sometime this week.

I have been overwhelmed by the wind ever since last spring. I don't remember experiencing so much wind before.

It's cold hear, and we are suppose to get up to 8 inches of snow. I am going to take advantage of the situation by cuddling up on the couch, watching old movies and starting a new painting.

Anno,
So you paint? Someday I'm gonna take up painting. That looks like
something I'd like to do, but after I finish these two manuscripts. It's storming here, again. Geese! What a crazy
winter this is turning out to be. The snow comes. The snow goes.
First it's subzero. Then it's 60 degrees. Most folks' around
here have colds they can't shake. Do you wonder at it?

NYS residents will have to go to the Yukon Territory to get warm. Ever since I posted on here about what mild winters we've
had recently, our weather has been wicked. I vow to never brag
about anything ever again. Now that's a New Year's resolution!

We had to go out to an appointment late this afternoon. -32C with the wind chill (I think that's about -25F). Brutal. But I'm very happy to say that my feet were toasty warm in my new Bogs boots. They're supposed to be good to -40, so today was a good test.

I am so glad I live here! It's been around 70 for highs and low 40s/high 30s at night with sunshine every day. I'm not bragging or gloating because come summer I'll be moaning and groaning about the 110 degrees, but better that than digging out of snow - been there, done that, and don't want to do it again. Lived in Vermont one winter - snowed Christmas Eve and we didn't see the ground again until Easter. I remember having to pour hot water on the ground 'cause my tires were frozen solid to the ground - and this at 2 in the afternoon! I think that was the same year we had a blizzard on Mother's Day and the year we moved far to the south!

I've got four layers of clothing on and I'm inside the house.
We live in a tri-level and have a fireplace in the family room.
Hubby starts a fire 'round 5 a.m. and it roars 'til 9 p.m.; he
cuts his own firewood from our woods out back and halls it to
the front porch, every winter. Think our high temp is supposed
to be zero, tomorrow. Today it's way up to 3 degrees. You ladies
out there on the West Coast and in Southwestern states, thank
the Good Lord for all that "warm" weather. LOL...! It's so cold
they're closing businesses, schools, and churches! Now wouldn't
that just flip your bippie!!! Gotta laugh! Can't do nothin' about it!!!

jabber, your fire sounds lovely. If I had a fire all day, I'd never get anything done. I couldn't leave it.

Eagle, enjoy the mall. We have lots of amll walkers at our local mall. I've been one during past winters, but I'm such a wimp this year. Don't even want to go to the mall to walk.

Well, no one is going anywhere, here today. I look out the window and can hardly see Groovy's house. And it isn't that far away. Schools are closed. Actual temp is around zero but the windchill will range from -10 to -20 degrees. I did walk Xena yesterday and it was plenty cold then. Not today. I'm in here 'til Sunday. Get this: By the end of next week, this area is supposed to have above average temps. We have the goofiest climate, lately! Dave from the late show said people will be throwing shoes at Al Gore, if he doesn't watch out. LOL...

Dotsie,
I know. I feel sorry for the elderly, regardless. My best friend had a pet saying, which she often used before her nursing home incident. It was, "Growing old isn't for whimps." Wish I had caught on to what was happening, a lot sooner. Perhaps something could've been done to spare her current misery. But, you
know how could've, should've, and would've goes.

Jawjaw,
Just read on my homepage where Alabama is colder than Alaska?
Holy Hannah! Never thought I'd ever see that in print!
Bundle up, there girl! Hope Santa remembered to bring Dolly some sweaters.

It's snowing here today and we're close to DC. I beleive it's snowing there too. Maybe, maybe not. Wouldn't it be wild if it snows tomorrow for the Inauguration? That would add to the craziness of all those people being in the same town at once. It will be wild enough without the snow. I plan on making time to watch some of the festivities live tomorrow.

I guess the global warming is confined to SoCali. I send love and mittens to everyone else.

We had almost 2 months of good weather, 60-70s and a little rain, but for 9 days now it's been 80-90s. I'm bitching because I had to shave my legs again to wear shorts. (Meredith ducking shoes...)

Shoes?? You'd be ducking my Bog boots if I didn't need them so badly today! Another balmy -18 here today. I DIDN'T shave my legs because I need the extra warmth. That's my extra layer under the long-johns, under the heavy winter denim jeans, under the down-filled coat. And don't forget the scarf, woolen hat and double gloves. (We waddle through winter here.)

But the sun is shining, so that makes it a sparkly winter day. Lots of diamonds everywhere you look.

From a Bruce Cockburn song:
"All the diamonds in the world that mean anything to me are conjured up by wind and sunlight sparkling on the sea"

Here, they sparkle on the sea of snow and it's beautiful.

meredith, I'd shave in an instant if it meant I could wear shorts.

Shoveled for the first time yesterday. Only two inches, and it was light. I thought about DJ who also lives here too, and how she was probably on the couch with her leg propped up, getting a break from shoveling. DJ, be careful crutching around on the ice and snow.

It's so cold here I had to jackhammer my Jell-O.

I let Dolly out out for a whizz and had to chop her off a tree trunk.

Its so cold that all the lawyers down here are keeping their hands in their OWN pockets.

Colder than a witches tit in a brass bra.

It's cold, peeps.

Tell that to my bra...We've had temps in the single digits for the last two weeks and more on the way. We've had snow, snow flurries, and wind chills, or as I use to say, wind shields, in single digits.

It's been so cold that the exhibitionist just described himself. Too cold to open his coat.

It was (0) zero degrees here this morning; windchill is minus fifteen. Geese! Everybody has on four layers of clothing. An exhibitionist would freeze all he owns before he got to his bare necessities. It takes a while to peel off all that stuff, ya know! But it would give a new meaning to "The Frozen Tundra," now wouldn't it???

I have a friend who teaches in Wales, Alaska...she is begging me to come there and live for a year and share the apartment. I visited there this SUMMER and it was in the 30s, with winds at 60 mph. Can you imagine their winters?

Actually, no I can't. And I don't want to. I just got back from
a walk in the park across from our house. I had on lots of winter
gear and I'm froze to the bone. I'm sitting here typing in my
longjohns: Gross, I know! I always thought I'd like to take an Alaskan cruise. But after this winter, the only place I want to go is S-O-U-T-H!!! I wanna hear the waves hitting the beach and feel sunshine on my face! I wanna see Mickey and Minnie! Kissimmee, I can't wait to see ya...!

Here is an example of how bone chilling cold its been here in Las vegas (the desert.) My furnace runs on gas and since I have lived here from 1985 my gas bills have ranged from $23.00 to $27.00 per month, becausre the furnace may have gone on once or twice plus my stove is gas...

WELL, last month the bill was $45.00 and I was shocked but the furnace had run more than usual. This bill that came today was $97.68, yee gads! I haven't cooked anymore than usual, but it has been soooo cold the furnace keeps going on and I keep it set on 66*. I just hope this cooling trend lasts long enough to include our usually so hot (you can literally fry an egg on the sidewalk) summers. That would be such a blessing.

Its 71* and in and out sunny today, so not at all bad.

These bills are crazy. chatty, When we received our BGE bill this month, I was trying to figure out what we'd done differently. Other than Christmas lights - nothing! ANd our bill was $495. Then we also have our oil bill becasue that's how our home is heated. How the heck could the BGE bill be that high? Everyone's screaming about it.

JJ, that's a year's worth of water. Ouch. Glad you got it fixed.

Today it's going to be 50 and sunny. Can't wait.

Got a photo from lionspaw who lives in Cape Coral, Florida. She took pictures of her car with ice on the windows. Said she used boiling water to get it off. I told her we used ice scrapers in the north and asked if she wanted me to mail her one.

Anyone heard how the crops are in Florida? SPeaking of prices, how about a $5.00 orange!

Now that's one expensive orange, there girl. Speaking of food
costs, Holy Hannah! I never get out the grocery store for less
a hundred dollars. Geese! And I buy meat in a separate location.
I often wonder how folks with four and five kids, feed those
little, hollow-legged people.

Talk about wild weather! It's crazy outside today! A few minutes
ago it was raining, now it's snowing. Wind is high, trees are
down, temp has fallen, power is flickerin', roads are turning into a sheet of ice, schools are closed, and we had a thunder storm a little while ago. They say the wind might increase to
70 miles per hour. Yesterday and the day before it was
spring like.

A friend just returned from Florida, where it was
26 degrees one morning. Some orange crops were damaged considerably.
This weird winter encompassed the whole country. Geese! Enough already!

See here! This was the morning of the night the plane went down.
The weather was horrific! And it was snowing in the southtowns
that night!

How awful for everyone involved. Sometimes when these jets fly lower than usual over my house, it is in the flight path, the house actually shakes. Scary as hell!!!

Its a lucky thing this plane crashed right before landing with near empty fuel tanks or the entire neighbodhood would have been engulfed in jet fuel. Many, many more on the ground would have perished.

I know. And it's a miracle the mom and daughter got out of that
house, which was hit. The dad died. But two out of three survived. The morning paper said the plane was faced in the
opposite direction from the airport. I told WB yesterday, "The location where the plane hit, didn't appear to be in line with the airport." God only knows what actually went wrong.
