Came down with a throat infection--dangerous for me, due to my IAHA. It's clearing up, but the doc has suggested I go ahead with a tonsillectomy. I am nearly fifty years old! I've heard this is awful for adults, so I'm very resistant.

Anybody out there had there's out as an adult? Any advice?

My husband had his tonsils out as an adult. Just be aware that it will take you longer to heal than it does for a child. Be prepared to eat soft foods for at least a week or more. Make sure the doctor gives you liquid pain relief. You won't be able to swallow a pill.

I hope all goes well for you. I have no advice but can offer prayers and say allow yourself plenty of healing time....

Fifty, I don't have any info for you either. I'll ask around. Forgive me but what is IAHA...I feel funny asking. Am I forgetful or just dumbstun( [Roll Eyes] ) today?

Thanks for the input, ladies. It's not a done deal, yet. I'm told I can monitor myself and see how I do for the next six months. It may keep me from going back into education though, since kids are just walking germ factories.

Chick, IAHA is idiosyncratic autoimmune hemolytic anemia -- fancy way of saying my body likes to destroy its red blood cells too early. With the right drugs and lifestyle I remain in remission. If I slip up, my hemoglobin drops so low they have to transfuse, and if it happens too much, or they can't fix me that way, the next step is to remove the spleen. So-o-o, needless to say, I try to behave!

I had mine out at age 27. I know not 50 but I was still an adult! I developed bad tonsils after about of mononucliosis.

I really did not have any problems. In fact, my Daddy still spoonfed me in the hospital!

My best friends husband had his out last year (age 35). He couldn't eat solid food for 2 weeks. Hurt for 4 weeks or so, mostly it was ear pain (reffered pain from his throat). He also developed Thrush from the antibiotics they gave after surgery to prevent infection. It was really painful, and he went back to the MD 6 times the first week. If you can avoid it, I wouldn't have it done. It was awful to watch and he said he would rather die than do it again. I need mine out, but after watching his ordeal, I won't do it.

My husband was told he needed to have his removed also. I believe he was around 27.
I told him not to do it.
Working in the ER for so many years, I've seen so many adults come in with problems from having their tonsils removed.

I barely glanced over the one that is a bad report. You know, if you are like me, at 52 or like her that needs them out the LAST thing you need is a horror story.

And besides God can and does, do miracles every day. I'm one.
