FYI:
Social Security payback option may disappear
Proposed rule would eliminate do-over opportunity.
Kiplinger's Personal Finance, August 25, 2010
Full article at: http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/RetirementandWills/article.aspx?post=1796567

(excerpt)
An obscure strategy that allows Social Security recipients to boost their income by repaying benefits received in earlier years and then claiming a bigger monthly check based on their older age may soon disappear. Kiplinger has learned that the Social Security Administration is moving to eliminate the so-called do-over strategy.

If the agency gets its way, the new rule could take effect within a few months.

The once little-known payback strategy has been gaining attention in recent years, thanks in part to a series of articles by Kiplinger that unveiled several ways of making the most of your Social Security benefits (see "Secrets to maximizing Social Security").

If you or someone you know might benefit from the payback strategy, now's the time to consider it and come to a decision. Putting it off could mean letting the government make the decision for you … by eliminating the opportunity.

Anything this government we have now can eliminate and taqke from the people they will!!! Then send millions more to every other country. They are determined to make our United States a third world country. Pay attention to what's going on, watch your backs...

Obama has nothing to do with it. SS's COA formula was and is mandated by Congress.

Thanks for clarifying who makes decisions on Social Security, Jakkom. And for the information about the SS payback option, which was something I had never heard of - probably because I am not yet a recipient of SSI...

I am a recipient of S.S., and it is so nice to get a check every month. I feel we seniors, all of us, paid in long enough and deserve these checks. If the dirty politicians would have left all monies we paid in alone, allowing it to grow, our checks could and would be a lot larger than they are.

Social Security was meant to be a safety net for those who didn't have any other retirement options. I read somewhere that we get back what we've paid in within five years of beginning to receive it. What galls me is the people who have plenty of money yet still get their SS checks. I say we stop giving it to those who don't need it. I don't get the politician's mindset that is against public 'welfare' yet they're receiving government subsidies in the form of free health insurance or Medicare or Social Security. I know of a guy who thinks any public assistance is wrong, yet is getting it for his 5+ kids. Is it just okay for him and not for everyone else?
