Are you a tomato lover? Here's great news from the American Institute for Cancer Research: A single tomato contains hundreds, possibly thousands of phytochemicals that perform different functions in our bodies to prevent cancer. Tomatoes are especially rich in the phytochemicals called lycopene, which has been linked to reduced prostrate cancers and is strongly believed to act as a breast cancer preventative as well. The lycopene is produced in greater strength in cooked tomatoes like sauces and soups....Pizza anyone?

Heck no,when we were kids in my Grandpas garden we would pick a big fat tomato and wash it in the cold well water, then slice it and put it on buttered Italian bread and eat, eat, eat!! I still do that only the tomatoes are smaller and I have no well....I use tomatoes so many ways.

How often do you hear of a food that is even better for you when it has been cooked?

I love a good homemade tomato, basil and garlic sauce with my pasta.

I'm getting hungry just reading this post. I love tomatoes sliced, with basil, Crazy Mixed Up Salt and Pepper, Feta cheese, and an oil and vinegar dressing. Yum!

I love them on salads, pizzas, sauces, grilled, broiled, with pasta, and just about any way possible.I remember one of my sisters eating them like apples when we were kids.

My husband still eats tomatoes like they were apples! We go through dozens of tomatoes a week, in omelets, salads, sauces, sandwiches and soups - like you Dotsie, any way possible. My favourite is a grilled tomato, bacon and cheese sandwich - I especially like changing the cheese - jarlsburg, gouda, cheddar and feta are my favourites so far. Mmmmm. Okay, now I'm hungry!

Jane, I love tomatoe sandwiches. Mayo, salt and pepper. Yummy. I think I just might have one for lunch today.

Glad to hear they're universal! I agree with Chatty...the best ones are straight from the garden...

Has anyone ever heard of planting tomatoes upside down? The bunnies and squirrels always eat my ground plants, so I have given up trying to have tomatoes.
