I was remembering something today after speaking to my mother for her 90th birthday. When I was 16, I went to my first formal dance, I had a pink very full formal, shoes to match, my dates name was Jim Gorley and was he hot! That and my sweeet sixteen birthday party was one of the highlights of my year.

I was also allowed to stay out then until 10:00 p.m and believe me with my strict father that was a miracle. I could wear as much makeup as I wanted to and shorter skirts. I was also allowed to have and go to pajama parties. I believe my sixteenth year more than any other was the year the most exciting firsts happened to me. I also fell madly in love that year...sigh!!!

When I was 16, I was uprooted and transplanted to the US. Then I was stuck into a 12th grade class in November after being finished with school for 5 months and working. Going from earning my own money to having to be in school again was quite a shock. That was also the year I went from mousy-brown hair to blonde. Don't remember what my curfew was, though, as I didn't go out much. I made up for that the following year when I went to nursing school, though! smile

Yonuh,
I just noticed your signature. Not much of a fan of Mike Moore,
if it's the one I'm thinking of, but the thought behind that
remark is cool! And true, too!

I went to my Junior Prom that year, my 16th year. The guy was
named Dale and he had red hair. My dress was beautiful, white and lacy. I look back on my raising, with much admiration.
The longer I live, the more I admire my adoptive parents and
maternal grandparents. But I guess I've said that more than
a few times. Thank you, God!

returning to school..after independance..wow..
where did you move from? Did you miss those you left behind..
Did the new people accept you
becoming blonde..another choice I observed in many of the teenagers I worked with..seems to be a statement of reconstucting.
And nursing college..you would have studies but practical hands on work..
lot happpening for 16 year old Yonuh

MA,
I agree. That must've been a huge adjustment for a 16-year-old
girl to absorb!

Jabber, the quote is from Mike not Michael. Mike Moore has a web site of uplifting and inspirational cartoons and ideas for public speaking. http://www.motivationalplus.com/

We moved here from UK in the mid 60s. I don't remember any backlash from changing my hair color - it wasn't a big change but definitely noticeable. I had completed my O levels in UK so thought I was done with school. The move was exciting in theory, but not in reality. It was hard to fit in with people who had been friends for years and in some cases, had grown up together. In retrospect, it was a huge learning curve!

I am sure your hair change gave you confidence..
How well did having sat you O Levels prepare you for US education (teacher interst here)
appreciate that you joining an established group would be a l;earning curve..
my relations moved to New Hampshire when my cousins were schoolchildren .all under 12..we missed them but they are well settled..Grandparent parents and three girls..now all married.

Gotcha! I'm glad I had the wrong guy in mind; the one I was thinking of, freaks me out a bit!

MA, I was way ahead of the 12th grade kids. I breezed through the rest of that year without having to work very hard. The reading list for 12th grade English had about 100 books on it, and I'd read them all. When we arrived here, we were told I had to enroll in school, so I did, and then they tested me. Wish they had done that before I enrolled!! Anyway, they then decided I didn't really need to be there academically, but since I was only 16, they insisted I had to be there. Don't you just love bureaucracy!!
