Won't be long and my youngest two will be out the door to college. Some minutes I can't wait, and others I get teary-eyed thinking about it.

This morning, as my son was sticking a knife in a plugged in toaster (we were at the beach in a house rental - we don't ahve a regular toaster at home and never have)to get his bagel out, I screamed, "unplug the toaster!"

This got me to thinking about what else I should have taught them.

I thought it might be fun to make a list of tid-bits of advice every kid should know before leaving for college.

I'll start:

Never stick a metal object in a toaster while it is plugged in.

Of course we can add a little humor here if you'd like:

Never stick your thumb into the open "chuck" of an electric drill and then turn it on! Our son did this when he was about 5 and it ripped his thumb nail right off!

Never try to separate frozen hamburger patties with a steak knife! Another son did this when he was about 17 and we ended up in the ER on New Year's night...several stitches, lots of pain and a fear of sharp knives.

Don't jump up and grab hold of a portable basketball hoop with both hands like the pros do! It may fall down on your head...knife boy did that, too. No concussion, thank God.

Never grab a cactus with your bare hand...knife boy, again, at around 9. We were picking those needles out for days, with tweezers, usually when he was asleep.

LOL! Ok ladies, I'm certainly glad your kids did not get hurt, and I don't mean to make light or laugh at your worries, but those are funny stories!

Don't use a knife to hack out the ice while defrosting the freezer part of the refrigerator - I did that in one of my first apartments, accidentally cut the piping and the landlord charged me $300 to replace the fridge!

Don't throw your good china at a mouse that's scampering across your living room floor.

Whites with whites, lights with whites, dark with darks, reds on their own unless they fancy wearing pink!

Always use a fabric softener.

Pin all socks together or buy a net bag for them otherwise the left or the right will go to sock heaven.

If washing is to be done in a common laundry room, mark your undies!

Remember to poke holes in films of microwaveable meals.

Do not attempt to boil eggs in the microwave. Neither should you dry socks nor tees in them.

Have a place for everything and everything in its place.

Text Mom & Dad before going to sleep.

Will update as they come, Dotsie. Whew! Lucky you saw him with the toaster dash.

Buy a toilet bowl brush and learn to use it. I was in my mid-20's before I (humiliatingly) found out that you're supposed to scrub out your toilet bowl once in a while...nobody ever told me...I could never figure out why other people's toilets were so clean! Duh.

Never wait till you're almost out of toilet paper to go shopping!
