I work for a principal's association and we have a few articles on zero tolerance policies and how they aren't good in elementary schools. This might be good for your case with the school board. Send me a private message and I'll figure out a way to send them to you.

smile, thanks for the update!
Who knows, maybe this was a blessing in disguise. For whatever reason, it sounds like the teachers don't have patience with your grandson. That's too bad because sometimes these "hyperactive" kids are brilliant and need to move at a faster pace because they're bored. When they're bored, they move. Heaven forbid!
My daughter has learning disabilities and ADHD. She goes to a small private school for kids with learning differences. No more that 7 kids to a class. It's an awesome learning environment because the teachers teach the way the kids need to learn. Not everyone learns by sitting and listening to a teacher talk nonstop. Each child has an individual learning program. She's been at the school for 5 years and it's a Godsend!
We were told by a respected teacher that we shouldn't put her in the public middle school because she would flounder. We were devastated, but we listened. Sometimes things like this happen for a reason.
I'd consider home schooling this little guy forever. I'm not sure about where you live but in Maryland there are so many home schooling groups that do learning together.
Another thought would be to keep him as far away from the school he was suspended from as possible. Unfortunately, kids get labeled. Another school where the KIDS don't know about the incident might also work.
Just my two cents. I bet speakermom might get her two cents in on this one. She's great with kids!
Whatever you do, please know I'm sending prayers towards heaven for your grandson, daughter, and you...also all the school personnel involved! God bless... [ May 19, 2004, 04:34 PM: Message edited by: Dotsie ]

Smile, you're right, it could have been the best thing that happened to his educationally. I just hope the teachers at the new school allow him a fresh start. Do you or your daughter know any of the teachers at the new school? Perhaps someone who could meet with him during the summer to see how well he's doing with the home schooling? Perhaps fill their heads with positive information about him and they may feel differently about the situation. Maybe realize it was just a little mistake by a little kid. The thought of this makes me so angry. I can't stand seeing little kids have their self-esteem messed with by the very institution that should be building it! You all remain on my prayer list, especially your grandson!
