You'd be surprised how many books I receive in the mail where the authors don't use Media Mail, or the FREE packaging the post office has to offer.

Ladies, check this out! You will save a dollar or two on each book.

What's Media Mail?

The only free packaging I'm aware of from the post office is for Priority Mail, overnight, or global.

It's what my mother used to call "the book rate." It's a special lower-priced postal rate for mailing items that are considered to be "media."

Whenever I mail a copy of my book, I ask for the media mail rate. Dotsie's right -- you can save a bundle. Media mail for my book is $1.42. The regular non-media rate (first-class) to mail the book is about $3.25.

You should be aware, though, that media mail packages generally take longer to arrive at their destinations than first-class. My book takes anywhere from 3-10 days to arrive via media mail. First class arrives in 1-2.

I always use Media Mail unless I'm mailing a few copies of my book in the same package. Then I use their (USPS) "Flat Rate" Priority Mail packaging it works out less and gets there in 1/2 the time.

Lori's right. The package will take longer if you use Media Mail, I think it's going 4th class or what they call Parcel Post. But, I've never had any complaints.

Also, check for the free packaging the post office offers. There's no need to buy envelopes, boxes, or mailing paper.

WOAH!@! I had never heard of this before. Does it only exist in the US or does it also exist in Canada? I will call my post office right away on Monday. I have been spending a royal fortune to mail books to the United States -- using the letter rate, my book costs about $6.50 including tax to mail from Ontario to New York State. That doesn't include the cost of the bubble envelope. I'm really interested in checking out this Media Rate. Fingers crossed that we have it here in the Third World too. LOL.

I don't think it's available there Sigrid.I don't think we can send book/media rate TO Canada either. Just in and around the states. No free boxes in Canada either as far as I know. I couldn't even insure my packages going to Canada one time. I believe that has changed.
Call the P office in case there has been some changes lately(in the last few weeks), just in case.

I checked out the media mail rate. I have a postage meter at work, plus I checked with the post office. It didn't make that much difference on my book. I wanted my books out faster than 10 days. For the amount of mailing I'm doing right now, first class is fine. Never saw anything free at the post office. They have lots of stuff for sale.

Chick,

You're right. It's not available here :-( I checked with the post office today. Bummer! I spend a fortune on postage especially when I have to send something overseas like to Japan or Iceland. I'm so disappointed. What can I do?

Thanks for the info. Best, Sigrid

I've used media mail for packages of books and cds. It just takes longer, but if you're not in a rush, you save a bundle.

What I haven't heard of is the free packaging-other than the priority and express mail envelopes [Confused] .
