My latest hobby/passion is combing the beaches for SeaGlass...it began when I attended a Craft Festival and found an artist who made beautiful picture frames encrusted in sea glass that she found on local beaches..that was about 4 years ago...since then I have found thousands of beautiful sparkling shards of glass that I have displayed all over my beach house in jars and bowls and canisters.

Combing the beaches duing the winter months is a spiritual experience for me..as I walk alone looking for treasures, I say my prayers and talk to my Mom and Dad who have passed...one day I was talking to my Mom in my mind..telling her about my youngest daughter and what a beautiful and kind young woman she has become..I said.."Mom, you would be so proud of her, she reminds me so much of you" at that very moment I saw a shiny peace of white glass sparkling brightly at the water's edge..when I picked it up it I saw the letter K etched into the sea tumbled glass...my daughter's name is Katie!!! My heart leapt..I believe my Mother was sending me a sign letting me know that she heard me. needless to say that piece of glass is displayed in a special way in my home..since then I have received some other messages as well...but most days I just find pretty little gems that I love so much...all colors, shapes and sizes...and I wonder about each one I find..where did it come from..how long has it been in the sea....

Do any of you ladies share my hobby? and if so , which beach do you seaglass on?

Now that sounds like my kind of hobby Nancy. I love the sea and anything to do with the sea; so what am I doing in this desert you ask???? I had to move here when my younger son was sick all the time with bronchitis. He got it the change of every season in the Midwest, so the specialists said he had to have a hot, dry climate, thus living here... I would love nothing better than walking the beaches with a couple largs dogs running behind me or/and sitting on a deck overlooking the sea, writing and editing manuscripts. Oh, be still my heart...

It sounds so wonderful, Nancy! My ideal place to live would be easy and fast access to both sea and mountains where it's moderate temperatures year round. I can wish! [sigh]

Your story sent chills down my spine. It is very much like what happened to me a few years back. Prior to moving south, DH and I rented a cottage on Lake Huron to share one more vacation with our sons. The cottage owner had one heck of a collection of 'mermaid tears' including a piece of prized cobalt blue glass on the kitchen windowsill. I decided then and there that I would go home with a collection as good or better. I spent the better part of the week combing the beach and found countless green, white and brown specimens. But, the blue remained elusive. On the final morning of our stay, after cleaning the cottage and sweeping out the sand for the last time, I took my coffee and headed to the beach to watch the sun rise. Just as you did, I was talking to God and the tears of my own were streaming down my cheeks. Were we doing the right thing by leaving our boys behind. Would my parents health hold up and on and on. As my walk came to an end, I headed back up to the cottage and looked down one last time - and there it was - the blue shard of sand worn glass. I took that as God's way of telling me everything would be OK. I still get emotional thinking about it. My blue 'tear' is nestled along with all the other 'tears' in a glass vase - and it will always remind me that God is with me everywhere - always. I could have walked right past that piece and never known - but God wanted to get my attention. Boy, did He ever.

Though we live in Vancouver, where parts of the city sits by the edge of the ocean, the City is abit actually protected by a strait so we don't get the front-on gigantic ocean waves of the Pacific Ocean. (Nevertheless, no one swims out far into the ocean in our area.) Hence, incoming seaglass and stuff from afar would be found on more exposed coastal areas along British Columbia. It's a huge province that is predominantly wilderness 150 kms. north of us.

So far, I haven't come across any seaglass in my travels to different islands along the coast and to Hawaii. Instead it's coming across tiny seashells and rocks with fossils embedded in them along the beach.

Eunice, You are such a dear ..if you do find a piece of sea glass for me from your sea it will occupy a very special place in my collection..you are such a sweet friend. Thank You.

Browser, I love your story...I always feel so close to heaven when I am on the beach..especially in the off season when the beaches are deserted...I love that God validated your decision by sending you a cobalt piece of glass as a sign.

Orchid, I only began collecting glass a few years ago..before that I never even noticed sea glass because I was actively searching for pretty shells and interesting chunks of driftwood...one of the most lucrative beaches for glass that I have found since I began my collection has been on the beaches of Maui..after that Puerto Rico ...so perhaps you found so many shells and rocks because that is what you were actively seeking..if you remember next time you are on on a beach..just take a few minutes to look for glass..I'll bet you will find some..:)

OOOOOHHHH..

I donīt gather seaglass now..but I sure did as a teenager when I lived in the Boston Area. It was my favorite passtime..among other things at that age wink

but your posts here bring back the memories of how almost each piece of seaglass carried a memory..told a story..

I collect small stones now..and living in Sweden with itīs very very old history..I find this exciting too..

humlan, the New England area is the best for finding great seaglass..they say it's because of all of the wrecks off of the coast...my daughter and I are planning a roadtrip along the coastal towns from Mass to Maine this fall...do you remember the name of the beach where you used to beach comb?

Your stones sound pretty..are they all different colors? And how do you display them?
