JJ- Kristallnacht was a tragic event..it's when the Nazis started to harrass violently and murder the Jews.. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kristallnacht I didn't read everything on the entry, but in my dim memory, the "crytal" refers to the shattered glass when the Nazis smashed the glass of windows where the Jews ran businesses, shop. Anne Frank was my heroine when I was 13 years old. I read her Diary and cried afterwards. I ended up reading about the the Nazi period soon thereafter.... i was only a teenager.

We were in Sergovia, Spain on November 1st, All Saints Day (also my Mom's birthday). We couldn't believe what a HUGE holiday it was. Even in Madrid almost everything was closed for the entire long weekend - Saturday, Sunday and Monday, except a few tourist shops. Everyone goes to church or temple at noon, then to the cemetary to leave flowers on the graves. In Spain (according to our tour director - I don't know about the rest of Europe), November 1st is the busiest day of the entire year for flower shops, topping even Mother's Day.

Hi Eagleheart! Great to have you back, dear friend! Well, I was in Sweden on Nov.1st...probably because I live there Anyway..on this day we decorate the graves of our loved ones with candles..(marschaller, as they are called in Sweden). And since just about everyone does this..by the time darkness comes..about 5pm at this time of year..the whole cemetery is filled with light. It´s such mystical feeling..all these little lights..making up a big light in the dark cemetery..and above all of this is the smoke from the candles..so you are in a kind of fog as you take your walk around the cemetery. Since people often return to their place of origin to lite candles for their ancestors..it is also a big family holiday..when the family gathers to decorate their graves with light. It´s really very very lovely..and oh so symbolic and meaningful!

Well, I was in Sweden on Nov.1st...probably because I live there hee hee, that was a funny Humlan. Marschaller sounds very moving. What a beautiful way to remember the loved ones. In Germany, the graves are elaborately decorated. Walking through a cemetery is more colourful than visiting a botanical garden. Although, I think alot of it is about whose grave is the fanciest; a bit too competitive for my taste.
