The July 22nd Wall Street Journal "Health Journal" by Melinda Beck described how some babies with colic may actually have undiagnosed gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and can be helped with acid-blocking drugs.

I was especially interested in this article because I take Prevacid and one of my children had to start taking Prevacid as a teen. So apparently GERD can start even earlier.

If you know of babies who seem to be really miserable -- crying for hours on end, etc., it may make sense to consider this possibility.

I have heard of this before pz, but I'm glad to see that the medical community is not pooh poohing the idea and they are embracing. Makes you wonder if years ago the "colic" could have actually been some form of GERD.

This just may be the answer to the age old question of colicky babies Phullis. Makes perfect sense. It is hard to imagine a poor infant with reflux problems, geesh, how sad is that?

Better if the GERD can be treated so these babies aren't so miserable as they are with the mis-diagnosis of "colic."
