My sister had to do it twice on me...over 20 years ago.

My problem is still...whenever I eat something that gets stuck in my throat,I panic..big time! Any little thing I'm having a major issue. My poor DH does not know what to do but try to calm me down.

It's a HORRIBLE thing to experience. Granted, my older sister saved my life..twice! But now I'm still having issues over 20 years later. It can get really bad...even if I am in a restaurant.

I've made it a point to chew very well since then...which has actually helped me not gain weight. I used to be fat, but not any more!!

Can anyone help?

Di, twice I have been scared that soemone might have to do it with me. Pieces of steak got stuck in my throat and it scared the heck out of me.

Can you cut everything up into very small pieces? Then you wouldn't have to worry.

You can do the Heimlich on yourself by throwing your body against a dull corner of a sofa or counter top. That must be so frightening to you. I saw Dr. Heimlich speak and he says the best thing to do for a drowning victim is the Heimlich first. It dislodges the water in the throat.

I was wondering that maybe worrying about it might cause your throat to close up even more in anticipation.

My sister while demented from her MS use to shovel her food into her mouth and had to have the Heimlich manuver 6 or 7 times in a couple of years and it turned out thats what killed her, choking to death on a sandwich she was eating...Since then we all take much smaller bites and I'm told a person can choke on a pea if it goes down the wrong hole...scary!!!!

Okay, now that IS scary!

I haven't had to have the Heimlich maneuver, but I used it on my husband. He was eating - fast, as he always did at the time. He'd slapped some peanut butter on a piece of white bread, folded it over, and began to scarf it down. A minute or two later, I heard that awful choking sound. The first time it didn't work, and I slapped on his back, and then tried again, and it worked.

Slowed down his eating.

And I remind him occasionally to be nice to me - I saved his life. [Big Grin]
