Amyone had bunion surgery? Looks like I'm going to be needing this. Wondering if anyone has had it done, and how it went?

What is a bunion? Something on the feet right? How does one get one, from shoes maybe?

Some bunions are the foot's response to body architecture. I have a long second toe (which actually means I have a shorter big toe), so my foot has accommodated by widening at the base of my big toe. My mom and daughter have the same shaped foot and I think mom had hers "removed" but I don't think it was a good idea.

I had surgery back in 1991. After suffering for decades, wearing ugly shoes and needing more and more cortisone injections - I finally had it done. It was not all that bad - and I wish I had done it years sooner. My doctor scared me into doing it actually. He said that the deterioration of the joint was getting so bad that if I didn't so it soon, it might be too late.

It was done outpatient. I was sedated for the procedure. I went in at 6:30 am and was home by lunch. It took about six weeks before I was really able to be as active as I wanted (I have to work out or I go crazy - and it was hard not being able to do that.) But, I think I was out of the 'Frankenstein shoe' in a few weeks and able to wear comfortable tennis shoes. There was very little pain outside of the first few days after surgery.

I promised myself that once I had 'pretty feet' again, I would wear sandals and keep polish on my toenails. I've kept that promise - even have a pedicure on occasion.

I was think bunions came from wearing shoes that were to tight , yes they can be very painful . Need the right fitted shoes and most of the time you don't get a good fit anymore . Chatty a bunion is on the bridge of the foot the wide with of the foot along the big toe .

My bunions are actually more a hereditary thing - but, wearing pointed high heals daily didn't help throughout the 60's/70's. The bunion on my left foot was the size of a huge walnut. Ugly bugger. I still have one on the right foot - but it hasn't given me any trouble and is not nearly as big.

The surgery realigned the bones and straightened the toes. They took a wedge of bone out, straightened the bone, screwed it all back together. Because of the deterioration of the bone - they had to put pins in - screws would not hold. The pins came out a few weeks later. I have a faint scar that is about 4" long on the top of the big toe and top of the foot.

I had x-rays and my doctor said the enlarged big toe joint was due to arthritis. It doesn't bother me when I'm barefoot, but some of my old shoes don't fit.

I had x-rays done on Tues and the doc said all the other joints in my foot look good and healthy, but there's a bone spur on the joint where the bunion is forming, and it looks like surgery is the only way to get out of pain. I'm even in pain barefoot sometimes. The good news is, I don't need the surgery where they actually break the bone and reset it. I'm going to have surgery in a few weeks, but doc thinks he'll be able to go in and shave off the spur, which according to him should help to speed up the recovery time. The hardest thing for me will be not being able to take the dog for a walk every day and not being able to get to the gym for several weeks.

Good luck Ann.

I have bunions, and my feet really feel better after wearing "yoga toes." (google it)

My bunions are from wearing high heels. They are better in the summer when I am barefoot most of the time.
