Please, on the intake form, ask if the patient is afraid of anyone at home or might be being abused.

Thank you all for your input This will be very helpful.

What kind of office design would make you feel comfortable? From the waiting room to the examining room etc.

Well, obviously he has to set his priorities straight, but simple suggestions might be lights be just a tad dimmer and warmer, not necessarily glaring fluorescent.

Some healthy plants...though he might want to be careful, some people are highly allergic to mold in soil..like my partner. Nice if people could face a window, rather than have their back to a window.

A fantasy might be...a skylight.

He should have a contest with a local design school for college students. That focuses on friendliness, professional clean-cut lines and economical.

Actually, I like brighter lights so I can read. Maybe one area of the waiting room with brighter lights, and one area dimmer?

Padded comfortable chairs. No molded plastic.

And whatever else happens, NO TV!!

Meredith, your comment about no TV reminds me of something that happened in a doctor's office a couple weeks ago. There was some loud mouth on a talk show and it was blaring in the waiting room. Hubby and I were the only ones in there so I got up and turned it all the way down. I stepped outside to get a call on my cell and when I returned, it was blaring again. Apparently the staff was listening from behind their desks. What a turn off!

I've been in offices where the doctors have pamphlets on common illnesses. I think that's a good idea.

You won't believe this but my doctor has just wired her waiting room for computer access stations. She has a huge salt water fish task full of the most beautiful colored fish, and plenty of lovely plants. Its like a resort hotel patio. Don't care, still hate all doctors.

I believe that every Doctor needs an approachable receptionist who is happy to welcome you and make you feel comfortable. Not one who acts too busy to notice you're there.
