I bet a number of this weekend's talking heads will wonder aloud if this latest round of massacre shootings is the result of failed efforts by a previous administration to deal with certain issues.

Baloney! Many of us grew up poor in the 50s, 60s, 70s, etc and were challenged by bullys at school, hand-me-down clothes which did not fit, no money for anything but the barest of essentials, etc. Yet we did not go out and kill people to show our anger.

As society's boundaries of ethics and civility continue to disappear in this rapidly evolving "anything goes" world, I think we'll see more and more violence.

If your own poor choices or Big Daddy fails you, why not rage out and take a dozen people with you? At least you'll have 3 minutes of fame and you'll get to show them all!

Why do I think this guy killed 13 people? Because he was a mental case who had a short fuse, and short fuses are fastly becoming the norm in our "whatever" society.

Josie,
I agree. On the other hand, money shortages will bring up the crime rate. If people want to commit suicide, why do they have
to take other lives? I don't get that. Destroying another human
is so, so sad. As you pointed out, all of us have disappointments. But that doesn't give us the right to kill somebody else. You have to wonder why people can't face the fact: Life isn't easy! And nobody promised it would be!

Well Mr. Voomg was not an American either, he was Vietnamese. He lost his job and so he decided to kill others to make himself feel powerful I suppose, who knows why these loser, nut jobs do what they do. How dare he come into our country, work and live well until he is affected (as we all are) by a bad economy and then go on a rampage executing 8 of those people, shooting them in the head while on their knees, and gut shooting the others. I hope he burns in HELL!!! Not everyone losing their homes, jobs, life savings, etc., goes crazy and takes it out on innocent people.

Really, chatty, would you feel better about the shootings if the guy had been born in the US? Most of our recent big-news shootings have been committed by good ol' native-born Americans. I'm pretty sure these mentally unstable men hadn't been thinking any too straight for quite some time. They have a lot of crazy anger and guns. We do this all the time, sadly. Some guy in Washington just killed his five kids and then himself.

You know, we have no idea what to do with people who seem to be unraveling mentally. Everyone looks the other way and hopes for the best. Hell, we barely have any idea or will to take care of people we're sure are already mentally ill. When they finally lose it and have guns, they can do a lot of damage. We have to accept, even though it's hard, that these incidents, which are nothing new, represent sort of perfect storms of mental illness and weapons and anger. It's awful, but we're not going to be able to stop them without restricting people's freedoms.

There's a man I know who people keep making sort-of joking comments about doing the same thing. He's a big gun person, super-religious, and feels that white guys have gotten the shaft. He owns his own business; maybe he should get the lecture about growing up and not blaming others for your circumstances. Me, I'm staying out of his way big-time.

I didn't respond to this immediately, chatty. I wanted to see how other forum members responded.

This recent immigrant should be jailed and tried for his crimes in the U.S.

But does any country know in advance how to psychologically assess mental stability before immigration AND to predict how the person will adjust to a different country, different language?

May all of us support with our public dollars, specialized cross-cultural counselling and mental health services for immigrants whom our countries depend on for North America's future growth. These people (and their children) will become our future taxpayers..to fund our social security, etc. in the end.

I guess no matter who the perpatrator of such a violent act is all we can do is shake our heads in disbelief and disgust, and as Ellemm says, stay the hell away from them whenever possible. I just feel sick inside for the innocents taken before their times away from life and their loved ones. Its so senseless.

What gets me is that nowadays the crazies who do this mass-murder thing, blend in with the rest of us. He may be the kid who lives next door to you or the businessman who works in your department or the guy who mows your lawn.

I'm glad this latest nut committed suicide, to avoid a trial where he might have gotten off on one of our many legal technicalities to protect the "innocent."

This is so true. A student in a private high school recently cracked and killed his mom with a baseball bat. Not one soul can share why it happened. It's very odd. Teachers all the way back to first grade were quoted in the local paper as being in total shock. So was his best friend. What ahppens in the brain that triggers this kind of behaviour?
