Berries... one cup 3 times a week, fresh or frozen.
Salmon... a 3 oz. serving twice a week. Baked, broiled or poached.
Leafy Greens...two 1/2 cup servings a day of spinach, romaine, collards, chard. The darker green the more benefits.
Whole Grains...oatmeal, whole wheat toast, tortillas, pastas, and brown rice. A serving of each daily. Nuts... Five fistfulls a week, or quaerter cup. 15 to 20 almonds, cashews, or peacans are best.
Golden Vegetables...Deepest yellows or oranges are best. Two 1/2 cups daily, sweet potato, 12 appricots from can or fresh, cup butternut squash and carrots.
Yogurt...low or non fat is best. 4 or more cups per week. You can use it any way you'd use sour cream.
These are necessary for our health before, during and after menopause...

Thanks for the list of 7. I went thru menopuse at 50 (11 years ago) and have been dealing with terrible inomnia since my hormones dried up! I have been reading and researchig bioidentical hormones. I believe the replcement of my hormones might help the insomnia, weight gain, decreased energy etc. Is anyone else dealing with this and or have any suggestions or things they have done that helped? I really dont want to use pharmaceuticals. Thanks!

http://www.menopause.org/http://www.menopause.org/bioidentical.aspx This article is a warning about use of bio-idential hormones for perimenopause/menopause. I am in perimenopause for over past 2 yrs., which means I still have my period. But for me, each time, it's fading slowly away. I am very lucky since my symptoms are mild. I am 50. As for insomnia, not feeling totally the best, women who have switched to regular exercise helps reduce some of the negative symptoms of perimenopause/menopause. Hope you talk with your doctor.. Do you exercise regularily each week? If not, seriously consider it..no doctor will oppose you on this.. for increasing energy levels, reducing some depression, etc.

Bio-identical hormones are pooh-poohed because they can't be patented. Which means big pharma can't make money on them. I was on bio-identical hormones for about a year and they made a huge difference.
I can not do HRT due to cancer risks. So I'm basically stuck with the peri-menopausal symptoms. I just wish my period would stop completely. I've been having 16 - 18 periods a year for the last 8 years. I'm DONE!!!! My last period lasted for 14 days. Just spotting the last 7, but still 7 days has always been enough.
Thankfully I stopped the hot flashes a few years back. Those never came when I was cold. Ugh!!!
Thanks for the list ChattyLady. I'll see if I can add more of those items to my diet.

Has anyone researched L-theanine, an amino acid that helps with sleep? A natural compound found naturally in tea (sans caffeine, thank God)! Lots of evidence that it has relaxing effects without increasing drowsiness (do Google search). People who tried it in Stress Manager ( http://te-ame.com) reported better sleep. Some people felt calmer when they took it after dinner. What do you think of L-Theanine?
