You're welcome. I keep wondering if I'm upsetting people by even mentioning these feast days. I don't want to offend other Christians who are not Catholic and do not recognize these days. I am presenting the info as a fact of what the church celebrates, but I do apologize if anyone is offended.
New Year's Eve is special because it is the eve of a very important day for Mary, which is Jan. 1. It recognizes the fact that since Jesus is God, she is called Mother of God. This does not mean she created Him (creator always implies fatherhood). It simply means she brought Him forth, which is what mothers do. And don't all Christians appreciate that? [ December 31, 2005, 01:30 PM: Message edited by: Bluebird ]

LOL about the priest comment!! Our priest is on the heavy side!! You're right that God didn't create God. I guess I just meant to point out that God is the creator of all things, and we call him Father, so father implies creating (planting the "seed"). Whereas, calling Mary Mother of God, the church is not saying she created God, but just brought Him forth in childbirth. I am probably not explaining it well since I'm not a theologian, I just play one on the internet!!

Bluebird, I think you're doing a fine job.
As a Catholic myself I like being reminded of these feast days and admit I had actually forgotten most of them so thanks for bringing them up.

I'm not Catholic and I'm not offended. I enjoy hearing about feast days. When we were in Russia last year we were at the Church of St. Elijiah on his feast day...what made that special for me is that particular church in Yuroslavl is only open twice a year...once at Easter and the other on August 1.
Until that time I never knew Elijiah is the patron saint of farmers...hurrah! I have a patron saint. I'm not 'xactly sure what that means but I like the sound of it :>).
I think if someone addresses me *personally* in an offensive manner, that's a reason to get offended. If a person is giving factual information and I get offended...that's my choice.
Does the Catholic church do anything for Twelfth Night? That's when I take down my Christmas decorations and burn the Christmas tree. Or what's left of it after the sheep have eaten the needles.

I've never heard anything called 12th. night, but the sunday after the 12th. day is called the feast of the Epiphany. It marks the day when the wise men came from the east, bearing gifts, to worship The King.

I am not Catholic or any other thing either. I was raised First Baptist, sort of, and entered into Catholic classes in order to marry my husband. But I've always had my personal beliefs, esp. after having been included in an evangelical, Christian , organization as a young woman.
I no longer call myself a member of any religious group, but I respect and admire anyone who follows their firm beliefs. So it is most interesting to me to hear of each of your faiths. I uphold your honor in adhering to these, and support your attempts to do just that...Each should be respected...And represented.
I have read and reread the New Testament any number of times. I respect every word ever spoken. I have a "Phillips", whom some of you will recognize, which has disintegrated into pieces of what was once was a book. I still cherish every single, mangled page. Notes on the side and all.......
But today, I stand by myself. At least in the sense of applying myself to any particular religion. And I feel very pleased about this....I still retain all the reverence for each of you that I have learned to understand...even those I don't. I have had the privilege of knowing people who were among the B'Hai (that's not the right spelling) faith, people of the Latter Day Saints, so many denominations of Christian Protestants, Christian Catholics, Jews, Jehovah"s Witness - not too many, but some whom revered Buddha - Mohammed. I, personally, have come to think that we all have more similarities than differences. (O, and I forgot to add my admired friends of American Indian Heritage - which is just stupid of me, since I so admire their thoughts on the way our world works). So I am just joining your posts and your ideas of faith!
Viva le differance! And may Harietta bless each and every one of you in the coming new year!!!!!
