I wasn't sure where to post this question, but I purchased a Christmas Cactus (I'm sure that isn't the correct name but it is what my Mom called them) last year and once all the blooms fell off put it in my dining room with my violets for the spring, summer and up till now. My question is, does anyone out there know how you tell if it is dead? It's little green leaves are kinda wrinkled, but it appears to be getting buds on it again.

Any assistance in how to keep these things alive would be greatly appreciated!!

There would be no new budding if it were not alive, give it plenty of sunshine ands don't water it too much. A friend of mine with a thriving indoor cactus garden says add some brewed/cool tea leaves to the soil around the base, she swears by this. Something about the alkaline in the soil....

Great advice--I'll save my tea leaves next time I have afternoon tea (don't get to do that too much these days)!

Totally appreciate your help,

The only way to kill an indoor cactus is by over-watering. Cacti thrive on negligence. I have over a dozen types in my yard.

My neighbor gave me a Xmas cactus last year and it bloomed like crazy last Xmas. Right now it's just starting to get buds on it. The best thing you can do for them is not expose them to light (I've even heard of people putting them in closets!) and they need very little water......too much will do them in. If it's getting buds on it you must be doing something right! Mine is looking kinda blah too but it has little buds on it so it ought to be looking better soon. I'm going to check out the link chick so kindly posted and see if I can learn more about it........

I have one directly behind me. It is loaded with buds! Meredith is right. I rarely water it. However, when it's blooming you need to keep the soil moist. I think I water more ina few weeks than I do the rest of the year.

I have numerous christmas catus' that belonged to my husbands's grandmother, so there are a few that are close to 40 years old. They sre are in bloom right now and they are lovely. Coming out during just the right time (holidays) I have a couple that when they bloom they are a peach color, then I have red and white ones. They are some of my favorite house plants.

I guess the wrinkled appearance of the leaves is what has me most worried. That and the ton of leaves that I took off that had turned brown/black over the summer. Do these things like closets during the summer--I guess this one could go in there next summer, if it survives.

Thanks to all of you for the advice! I appreciate it. Guess I'll tell the husband not to water that one and only water the violets while I'm gone next week. [Cool]
