I didn't start wearing sunglasses until I was around 34 yrs. old. About 2 yrs. after I returned to cycling regularily. Amazing that I used to think sunglasses would darken my world unsafely or whatever nonsense.

Now I find my eyes sensitive to outdoor daylight that whenever I bike or go for walk, I must wear sunglasses. And this is not even it's sunny. It could be cloudy.

I often wonder about the plastic lens part for UV protection, how much protection it is really providiing. If anyone has good reliable info...

I also prefer my lens colour to be more grey netural instead of yellow or a slight off-pink which makes gives scenery a more blue tone. I'm quite picky about fit and the sunglass arm also because I wear sunglasses for cycling. They must fit around eye, to protect bugs or dirt that flying in or little stones bounce up. The arms must be slim and shaped in a way that when I wear a ear protection headhead over my hair and them, that they don't press against my head to hard.

I love yellow shades if the light is difused or glaring.
My eyes have become more sensitive too, and when it's cold they get teary. Oh brother...I remind myself of my grandmother. It is also another reason why I don't ski anymore. I was unable to make out the moguls, and often sped over them with a flying leap;...getting half a heart attack while doing so. lol

I inherited sensitive eyes so I've been wearing shades since a very early age. The only time I don't have to wear them out is in the dead of winter. Do you have to wear them then, Orchid? And if so, is it because of cycling?

Jawjaw, I wear sunglasses in winter even though we don't get much snow at the foot of our mountains.

And will wear sunglasses all season during daylight even if I am walking around. Part of it might be habit, especially on cloudy days. But that's just me I guess.

Only within the last 2 years, my eyes have started to tear from time to time when I cycle. I just try to wipe my eye(s) and continue cycling. It's a common thing among older cyclists. Not sure why.

I never had this happend to me prior to that.
I also read somewhere that not wearing sunglasses over many years in sunnier climates, means higher chance of cataracts? Needs more research here...

Well I have a tendency to do the same and even on cloudy days, I have them on. My eyes are just so sensitive to light. Maybe we should ask Dr. Dotsie (her hubby) why that is for some of us...I would be curious to know...

Now all I need to do is remember to have him read this so I can respond for him. Think I can do that?

Dear Dr Ross

I'm sensitive to light as well and squint a lot. Could living in London be the culprit, being grey all of the time and all that? How much does environment affect eyesight?

Yours sincerely
A very patient, Patient
