The Penny


Remember this every time you pass that little penny
in the parking lot.

I always thought that it was for Good Luck, but I
love this version better:

I found a penny today
Just laying on the ground.
But it's not just a penny,
this little coin I've found.


Found pennies come from heaven,
That's what my Grandpa told me.
He said Angels toss them down.
Oh, how I loved that story.

He said when an Angel misses you,
They toss a penny down.
Sometimes just to cheer you up,
To make a smile out of your frown.

So, don't pass by that penny,
When you're feeling blue. It may be a penny from heaven,
that an Angel's tossed to you.

I received that story in an email and it really made me smile. After reading the email, I was out and about and saw a penny on the ground and smiled as I picked it up.

After my mother passed away, a friend told me that she had read about "pennies from Heaven"...and that it meant that someone close to you who had passed was tossing them downward to let you know he/she was thinking of you. Well, I'm not kidding - I started finding pennies everywhere! My mother passed in 2002, and I'm still finding them! The site, itself, is SO sad - it's dedicated to the woman's daughter, who passed away.

My mother and I have always said that whenever we find a coin on the ground, Daddy was letting us know he was there. One day we were shopping for a clothes hamper for her small bathroom. We went in one store and then another. Then back to the first store...then back to the next store, back and forth, back and forth. We were trying to decide between two different baskets we had found. We put wayyyy too much energy into it.

Anyway, by the time we decided, we were both exhausted and getting to the "silly" stage about it. We were laughing as we started out the door of the store and I said, "I'll tell you one thing, if Daddy had been with us he would have said, BUY THE XXX THING ALREADY!" As I said that, I looked down and said, "Look Mother! Daddy IS with us." There in front of me was a penny. I said, "Don't you know he's tired of us going back and forth!" We both started laughing a little more. At that exact moment, Mother looked down and in front of her was another coin... I kid you not. She said, "Boy are you right! Look here!" We started hee hawing then. It was a good cleansing laugh and we both walked away feeling warm and fuzzy inside. Thanks Daddy!
