Hello

Hopefully I have put this in the right place!

Having recently become published I wondered if any of you lovely lady writers had any tips for promoting my book?

Hi Samantha!
I would join authorsden.com. They offer a lot of opportunities, like posting excerpts of your work for others to read, blogging, etc. I self-published and the problem I'm having is GETTING THE WORD OUT. I've sent it to a couple of "big names" so I'm hoping it will catch the eye and interest of one of them. PATIENCE, I'm learning.

I've been advertising on various sites but they haven't paid off AT ALL!!! To me, that is a waste of money that I just don't have to throw around (since I'm currently unemployed). I've had people review my work and post to Amazon and I'm having marginal success there.

It can get frustrating but I keep being reminded of Phllipians 4:6-8 and that keeps me focused.

The Podcasting is also helping since I'm pulling subjects directly from my book.

Identify your genre and they MARKET THEM. I wish you the best and maybe you can be a guest on WHATEVER! and talk about your book sometime.

Peace & Blessings,

Hi Beverly

Thank you for your comments. My publisher Publishamerica has done wonders for shops etc knowing about it and it is even on the shelves of Barnes and Noble with a 5 star rating.

Its getting the public to know about it I think I am struggling with.

Mind you I decided this morning to make my husband my Manager and have got him on the phone and do you know what it's working!! I may have a book signing lined up that I have been trying to get for weeks. Lol!

Would love to be a guest sometime, just give me the shout.

The first tip I give all authors is to buy Carolyn Howard-Johnson's book The Frugal Book Promoter and read it. You can purchase the ebook version or find out how to get a paperback copy here: http://www.starpublish.com/carolyn_howard-johnson.htm

It's like the spaghetti sauce commercial, if you want it, it's in there. It tells you what you need to know to have a successful marketing campaign.

Another friend and VERY successful author is Trish Terrell (p.m. terrell) who has a book coming out in Sept. Take the Mystery out of Promoting your Book on promotions AND how to have successful book signings, etc....Another one that should become your bible. It should be available for pre-ordering soon. You can read all about P.M. Terrell at this site: http://www.pmterrell.com/ (scroll down a bit to read about the upcoming book).

These people have paved the way for you. Don't reinvent the wheel...read what they have to say, then go out and do it! Trust me...it works!

No...these are people who are veterans in the publishing, writing, and promoting world. They don't do reviews, to my knowledge.

According to Dan Poynter, one of the self-publishing gurus, bookstores are lousy places to sell books. There are just too many of them there! We have published two wine books and sold about 3,000 of them. We mainly sell in wineries. So where else would your book do well besides bookstores?

Other things that have worked:
- We have a great web site (www.MountainVinesPub.com) and someone who feeds the search engines with our keywords on a regular basis.
- Newsletter to about 70 people who refer others
- I teach a class at the local recreation center
- We carry the books with us, visit wineries and talk it up.

Patience is right!

Two other books to look at are Guerrilla Marketing for Writers (Jay Contrad Levinson et al) and Shameless Marketing for Brazen Hussies by Marilyn Ross.

Good luck

I'm going to take a different approach here. Due to the nature of your book and because one of my publisher's authors (Doreen Virtue) and I spoke about book promotion, I am going to suggest allowing spirit to open doors that should be opened. Doreen has sold a ton of books and she refuses to self-promote.

I've had it happen in my own life. I, of course, put myself out there but allow God to do the rest. I do make contacts with shelters, etc to help them and to donate my book but I have never actively gone on a promotion gig. I detest book signings and have even turned some down. My publicist agrees with me that they don't really sell that many books unless friends and family show up. I'm not saying that people don't sell at them, it's just not my thing.

I would also suggest that you try to book speaking engagements on your topic. That way, you meet people and they want to hear more and buy your book.

Okay, that's my two cents.

Thank you for your two cents Dianne. I do leave most of it to spirit but am a great believer in opening the doors ready for spirit to push something through.

Today I have been approached by a magazine writer to do another article and I have another journalist writing a different kind of article on my behalf as a consequence of giving it to the Universe.

So we shall see what else spirit has planned!

Samantha, I have found that most of the books I sell are to people who have heard of me through a friend. Therefore, I recommend having your friends put blurbs about your book in their newsletters and on their web sites. Don't have friends with newsletters and web sites? Make some! I send a newsletter to 3,000 subscribers. I'd be happy to include some information about your book. Email me at hugsandhope@gmail.com

This offer is open to anyone who has a web site or a book that might interest my newsletter readers. I would appreciate a link back to my site or a blurb about my book in your newsletter.

My newsletter focuses on helping families of critically ill children (see my site at www.hugsandhope.org ) but I often include miscellaneous recommended web sites and books.

Other than NABBW, Marsha is the only thing I advertise on my web site. Why? Because helping children is near and dear to my heart.

I believe in her and the mission she's taken on to help children everywhere. I call her Saint Marsha. To know her is to love her. But don't tell her I said so...I LOVE giving her a hard time.

First of all, I thank Marsha for including my children's book, Topsy Turvy Land , in one of her newsletters. Marsha, I didn't realize you had so many subscribers! That's great!

Secondly, there's a Yahoo group for Selp Publishing you might want to join. Although I'm not self-published, my publisher began her company by publishing her own books, and she's done very well- enough so that she can now publish and promote people like me. She recommended the Yahoo group for anyone who self-publishes or has a small publisher with limited resources where the author is expected to help promote her book. In fact, I've talked to many authors who are with the 'big houses' and they're still expected to help promote their books.

Here's the link and a warning. There's LOTS of posts with this group, so I went on 'digest,' but you'll find tons of wonderful information:

Hello Dianne

Last week I decided to hand the book back to spirit to move forward. They sent it so they clearly have a purpose for it. So also decided to take step back and instead of working I have been meditating, relaxing and enjoying the UK Sun.

During this time the following has happened:

I have been approached by one journalist to write a story about the book,

have signed another contract with a publishing house for the story about my daughters abilities and my experiences of raising a child aware of spirit

also by one to be included in a ezine about inspirational people.

She is also writing a book called spotlight and has asked me to be included in it, again it is about inspirational people.

My amazon ranking has gone up to 7,000 !!!! on amazon.co.uk.

I have my first book signing organised for the 19th August too!!

So I wanted to thank you for being a little angel in my life and reminding me of a very basic dynamic to allow what is ment to come in.

Thank you

Beverly, I used to be a frequent visitor to BWS. I'm jumping back in by selecting from the active topics today. Dianne and I have shared our differences re: book signings, which I happen to like. At my last signing, 100% of the audience purchased. I enjoyed the "open discussion" with the audience about the topics covered in my book. I don't like presentations but I am trying because I am on a mission (or calling) and I have to get used to doing speeches. So, it's different for each of us. I don't really "promote" my book. I talk about the topics that are hard to talk about, like sexual assault, domestic violence, and suicide. Then if spirit moves me to mention my book, I do so. Then if spirit moves the listener to want a book, it so happens. My methods are much like Dianne's other than the book signing difference. Of course, I have no income! Are you looking for readers to review your book? Are you looking for people to interview on your talk show? L

However, I would not mind a publicist or marketer or promoter or whatever it is that I need. I do want my book to come to its highest good to reach all those who may benefit. I once interviewed an expert on book promotion. Her fee was $90.00 an hour. She told me I needed a business plan and a marketing plan, both of which I needed to create. ME! Even the big publishing houses require the author to do this work. Health Communications, publisher of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, was interested in my book. They wanted me to submit (along with my book proposal) a business and marketing plan that included the seminars and conferences I would speak at, and the probable number in the audiences, for the next 3-5 years. In other words, they wanted a guaranteed market. As a first time author, I could not do that. And, the business plan and marketing plan was over my head. What I'd like is to pay someone to do the promotion plan and the marketing for me. I'll be glad to polish my speaking skills, signing skills, and show up for the gigs and interviews, and pay from the proceeds of the books. Also, I noticed multiple products at signings and events. For example, a speaker with a book will sell a DVD/audio of a prior speech. I sell a pendant called A Drop for TEARS. It is a tear drop shaped crystal that sells for $10.00. TEARS is my Project: Telling Everyone About Rape & Suicide. I'm also developing other pieces of jewelry with quotes from my book attached. The sales will help cover costs of gas to the events that do not pay me to speak. Agencies that deal with SA & DV do not have big budgets. Do you have a catchy illustrated cover that will make a fridge magnet for an additional yet inexpensive sale during a signing? What products can you think of for multiple sales? Does anyone know of a publicist for me? How about a stylist? Although the sales people at Coldwater Creek are wonderful! Tell them you're gonna do a book signing and they will treat you like a rock star!

Hello Lynnie

I think the bottom line is that unless you are famous even the big publishing houses expect you to do all the marketing and publicity simply because you are your book. It requires your passion about what you do or what you have written to be successful, just as it does with any business and writing is a business after all.

So far I have done most of my promotion through my website and ezine online and a local paper. Its very early days but I am enjoying the journey and thats what matters. To be miserable and a huge succes is not what I desire, I would prefer to be an inspiration, thats all I ask of life.

I found getting my husband to phone up as my Manager opened doors faster with regards to book signings (in the UK they are not so widely done as it appears in the USA).

Good luck with the book.

I can honestly say that anybody writing a book, unless you are Oprah or Steven King, needs to understand that the marketing is UP TO YOU. I don't care what your publisher promises you, if it sales, it will be because of YOUR efforts. This should be in every single beginning writiing class on the syllablis! YOUR BOOK SALES ARE EQUAL TO THE AMOUNT OF TIME YOU INVEST IN MARKETING IT. Period. I feel so bad for people who have just finished a book only to find out (the hard way) that the money they gave a publisher for marketing was for naught. Ask any veteran (of which I am NOT one, but hope to be some day) of the biz and they will tell you right up front, it is UP TO YOU!

You make it or break it. Yes, some publishers help...yes, some of them even come thru writing press releases, even setting up a few book signings...but in reality folks...it is up to you.

In my opinion, the sooner a writer realizes and accepts this, the better their marketing plan will be, and their successes. I know I thought...you write a book, I've done my part, now the publisher would take over. NOT. If someone had told me from the get-go, I would have been laying the groundwork way before the book even came out. That's why these new books that are out on marketing your work are so popular AND needed!

I'm not saying publishers don't help so please do not misunderstand me. I am also NOT saying that there are NONE that go out and do some marketing for you...there again, please do not misunderstand.

What I AM saying is that 99.9% of them DO NOT do the aggressive marketing you need for your book to be out there and for the continued sales to climb.

(Queen stepping down from soapbox...goes toward kitchen, dragging her soapbox behind her...trips over Trixie, curses, but not too badly, then continues on to her bowl of cereal...)

Well said Queen JJ!

I suppose you could say that if you don't enjoy the promotional journey, you are not going to be the successful Author you would like to be.

JJ, you're so right. The majority of marketing and promotion must be assumed by the author. It's not going to come from your publisher. However, you can hire a publicist for 3 - 6 months to blast the world with info about your book but it can cost you from 3K to 20K depending on how many services you purchase.

And, of course, authors need to know how to market and promote, which most of us don't, not really. So, we have to buy the books that tell us how to market and promote. We need to talk to each other and share what's worked and what hasn't so we can help educate each other in the promotion world.

I have a new book out called TRUST IN THE WIND, and I've been doing a lot of online marketing. I'll have my first booksigning for it in September. If that doesn't work, I'll try something different.

Hello Vicki

My mum has just moved to your neck of the woods as we say, Snead Island.

Anyway, I just wanted to wish you every success with your book. I have my first book signing in August so will share how that goes.

One of the things I have done is join a website called www.starnow.co.uk. On here you will find all the magazines and tv shows asking for participants. UK and USA.

I was involved in an article in a national paper through this and even though my website wasn't given I had thousands of hits on the day the paper came out. So it might be worth looking at!

See? There you go! THAT'S NETWORKING....THAT'S MARKETING...You girls have hit the nail on the head. It's up to us to share, help promote, and support one another. I'm telling you right now that you can take it to the bank (no pun intended) that if you help someone in this biz, it comes back to your threefold.

There's plenty for everybody out there. Way to go you two. Way to share!

I wanted to bring this post back up because I'm not sure we answered Casey's question about "where else" to promote books that are specific to a thing, cause, or targeted audience. Like her wine book.

One venue I think we have a tendency to overlook is libraries. Most libraries I've visited have book clubs that are registered with them and they are always looking for speakers and not necessarily someone "on the circuit." They want people/authors to come and just talk to their book club. It's entertainment for them. Usually they don't pay, but you are allowed to sell your books afterwards. What book club can resist buying your books? Hello? It's a book club..it's what they do! You can also tell them, "Look, you buy my book, read it, then I'll come back at a scheduled time FREE and we'll discuss it. We'll have ANOTHER party." When put to them like this, they jump on it. Sell them at a discount if you want to, they will love you for that. Or make sure you take some "freebies" like I have bookmarks, and have a drawing for a book. Sometimes I throw in a couple of drawings for The Complete Writer's Journal, which is a journal put together by the Author's Coalition I belong to. It has bits and pieces of writing tips and quotes (mine included, whuhooo) inside the journal. It makes a great gift idea. AnyWAY...my point is that libraries are a great place to spread the word and get "in" with book clubs.

Hello JJ

I know a lot of the USA Publishamerica Authors (thats my publisher) do a lot of library work to get their book out there and a lot of them appear to go into schools too. I will have to see if they do the same here in the UK.

I have just applied to be in another womens magazine article so fingers crossed!!

I have also been asked to go back into a local college and talk to the new Students in September - I love that and I definately recommend it if you have appropriate material etc.

Maybe we can get Pam Kimmell, one of our own, to come in here and share her experience with schools and how she became involved. It's a neat experience and is along the same lines as you are referring to. Pam?

Thanks for the "intro" JJ ! As many of you know, I'm taking a bit of a hiatus from my mystery series because of my health issues/chemo treatments BUT that hasn't stopped me from at least staying "involved" with writing. Last March I was invited by a librarian at one of the local high schools to join some other local writers and teachers for a Junior Writers Conference at the community college. I jumped at the chance to share my knowledge with the kids who are just trying their wings. It was wonderful. The local Borders store sponsored the event and ran a "book sales" table at the conference for those of us who participated. I had two groups of kids; fiction writers and poets.

The librarian told me after the conference that several of the students who had been in my work/critique groups had asked if I could come speak to them after school some time. I came in to talk with them about character development - one of my favorite subjects! I've already been asked to come back in September to talk to the students again....I can't wait. The enthusiasm these very talented kids have is infectious. The plans are already in progress for the 2007 Junior Writers Conference at the college and I'll be there again!

This is one of the most rewarding and satisfying things I can think of - "paying it forward" in helping the students find their voice, AND give them some information on the "real" world of publishing and writing. I want them to know it's a tough road but well worth it.

Also, JJ, you are right about libraries....they are usually thrilled to have donations of our books and sponsor events as well.

Leave no stone unturned!

Hello Pam

Lovely to read about what you are upto. I go into the local holistic college and show them firstly what it is to be a Spiritual Medium and secondly as a Spiritual Life Coach I talk to them about the importance of loving yourself first and it is great. It is just so rewarding to do.

Definately recommend it to anyone who is thinking about it.
It raises your credibility too.

Donating a copy of your book to the library is a good way to go. If they like it, they might order more. Plus, if people read it, they may want to buy it and give it as a gift.

Also, about book clubs. Don't forget the ones online.

Thank you for reminding me about letting the spirit do it's part. I forget that it is up to me to get the word out but up to the spirit to help the right people hear it.

I also hate book signing events and have talked with Borders & Barnes/Nobel about putting my book on aging in their stores. They admit the only books that show interest is for Alzheimers. That is that for me. I had a feeling they were telling me the truth.

Facing physical challenges and lifestyle changes is part of staying independent as we age. Knowing what products and services are available is just a portion of the total picture. How many friends spend time looking for places for their parents and haven't any idea where to start?

Visit my storefront: www.eldercareconcierge.net and check out the preview. If you find it can help a friend, relative or client, please spread the word. If I can help you in a email newsletter, please email me directly at eldercareconcierge@comcast.net.

We have arranged for the workshop to take place two weeks after the book signing so fingers crossed I may have found a new veue for workshops!

Here's an article I wrote a couple years ago that may give you some ideas.

Write, Publish and Market a Book with No Out-of-Pocket Money
By Kathleen Gage

Do you dream of having a book published, but don’t know where to turn? Already have a book, but unsure of how to promote it? Looking for cost effective high-return strategies to market your book? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the following information is for you.

Many writers and aspiring authors are under the mistaken belief if their book is published by a publishing house they can sit back and watch sales miraculously happen. Nothing could be further from the truth. Fact is, competition to have your manuscript noticed and published by a large house is extremely fierce. Additionally, no matter who publishes your book, you absolutely must take an active roll in marketing, promoting and selling your book.

Moreover, profit margins are not extremely good when you go through a publisher. Sure, if you sell tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of books, you make substantial amounts of money. In reality only a small percentage of writers achieve this level of success.

A great model for achieving success is to self-publish and actively promote your book. Self-publishing is one of the best ways to get your manuscript to market quickly is to. Another great benefit of self-publishing is you have complete control of the creative process. You make the decisions on content, editing, cover design, title and you reap the profits.

A primary downside with self publishing are costs involved. Depending on whether or not you hire an editor, designer, layout person and cost of printing, the initial outlay for self-publishing a book can be several thousands of dollars for the first run. Besides there are no guarantees your book will sell. However, you can lessen your risk of costs and increase your level of sales with a simple formula.

Imagine if you could self publish with no out of pocket money. Additionally, imagine gaining lots of free publicity and visibility in your market at the same time. I know this to be true, because I have done it.

The following formula is one that can be used by virtually anyone to raise funds to publish a book. In addition, you can gain great visibility, do the initial run with no out of pocket money and position yourself for volume sales.

Although the formula is rather simple in concept, it is not necessarily easy to do as it takes planning, time, effort, consistency and great follow up to make it work as well as possible.

You can write, publish and market a book with no out of pocket expenses by hosting a seminar with a topic that is linked to the book. In order to keep costs down in the rollout host the seminar in your local market. You can further offset costs by securing sponsors for the seminar. Event sponsors provide funding necessary to the costs of an event. They can either contribute in actual dollars or with in-kind offerings. Sponsors underwrite various aspects of an event.

I did this at the beginning of December with my most recent book, “101 Ways to Get Your Foot in the Door” and had an incredible response. Although there was a lot of work involved in the rollout the results were, and continue to be, incredible.

Besides writing content for the book each author had a very specific role. Mine was the marketing and promotions of the book. The first level was to develop a clear marketing strategy for my 3 co-authors and myself.

Prior to beginning the writing of the book, we developed a very detailed project plan. The plan included hosting an event to introduce the book to our local market.

Knowing the costs to an event such as we were planning, I knew it would be beneficial to secure sponsors. I developed a very solid proposal for sponsorship of the seminar. Because of very detailed information and showing the sponsors how they would gain from being involved, I was able to secure two excellent sponsors. One is a primary business newspaper in Utah and the other is an organization who targets start up businesses.

The paper was more than willing to do some advertising for the event in exchange for some great visibility and additional subscribers. The organization offset the costs of the room and audio-visual equipment in exchange for mentions in the advertising and all pre-event promotions. Both sponsors were given the opportunity to do a 5 minute presentation at the seminar and distribute promotional information to everyone in attendance. It was a win/win all the way around.

Had I not had a clear-cut proposal for the potential sponsors chances are I would not have secured their support. Also, I know it is easier to gain support from businesses who know me rather than trying to get sponsorship from an organization who has no idea who I am. The same will be true for most anyone.

With day of event expenses covered, we could now focus on generating revenue for publishing the book. This was done by pre-selling the book. Anyone who purchased the book sight unseen by November 28, 2004 was given a seat into the seminar on December 2nd.

With initial revenues from pre-seminar sales designed to offset book production costs we were able to write, market and publish the book with no out of pocket money. By utilizing the databases of all four authors, press releases, pre-event radio interviews and presentations at Chambers and local organizations, word of mouth promotions, and other low-cost/no-cost forms of promotions, we sold over 350 copies sight unseen. (Cost of the book is $19.95)

We had well over 200 people attend the seminar as some of the pre-event purchases were from folks who were out of the area.

A key to our success was having a functional website were the book was (and is) available. www.101waystogetyourfootinthedoor.com We utilized online credit card purchasing options for buyers. In that 80% of our sales were done with Internet and credit cards, we would have been remiss to not use this as a method to sell.

As we were pre-selling it was important to let people know that the cost of a seat into the seminar was the book. Also, if they didn’t make it to the seminar we would mail them the book for $4 more or they could pick it up. The $4 covered mailing costs. If we didn’t do this we would have cut way into our profit margin.

We made a strong point of letting people know they were buying the book, not the seat into the seminar. However, the only way into the seminar was to buy the book.

To gain even more value from the event and increase day of event revenues each author sold other products Back of the Room (BOR). One author sold a sales training program. The signups that day realized several thousand in additional revenue for her.

The two other authors sold specialty items and set up appointments for those who were interested in such things in their sales campaigns.

I sold my Street Smarts Marketing and Promotions™ program as an E-book. This helped me to generate several thousand in additional revenue. Knowing audience members were already interested in my material, I put together a special day of event package with three of my e-products bundled together. Everyone received one of my order forms upon registering.

At the end of my session I did a short sales presentation. All folks had to do was fill out the order form. With each sale, all I had to do was process their credit cards and email them the PDF document. No mailing costs or printing costs. Nearly a 100% profit margin.

Many self published authors shy away from doing presentations claiming to be an author and not a speaker. Fact is, if you get in front of a target audience who is interested in your topic and you present your ideas well the amount of books you can sell is incredible.

The book complimented by a well delivered presentation allow you to get in front of meeting planners who may be in a position to utilize your services and your book at a later date. You may also have representatives from companies who want to buy large quantities of your book.

Since the release of the book I have had some companies buy “101 Ways to Get You’re your Foot in the Door” in large quantities. Because Maxwell Publishing is my company and the book was published through Maxwell, I have the flexibility to do special runs. With a minimum purchase a client can add their logo to the front cover of the book and a personalized letter from whomever they choose included in the book. This is a great marketing tool for them with long-term benefits to their employees or customers.

Granted, myself and one of the other authors are professional speakers so presenting at an event such as I outlined is a part of our marketing model. However, two of the authors are not professional speakers per say. Yet, in their everyday business they do present frequently. However, with this event, it was a different type of presentation for them. They will be the first to admit that additional exposure and sales were worth doing this type of presentation.

Regardless of your topic the model we implemented can be used by virtually anyone. For example, if you have a book on nutrition, find a health food store who wants more foot traffic and visibility. They may be a perfect fit as a sponsor. Not only can they help you to offset costs they can help to promote the event. At the seminar you can promote their products with coupons, mentions and information provided. It’s a win/win.

If you have a book on real estate sales there’s bound to be a mortgage company who may be interested in sponsoring you. Perhaps they would be willing to buy a book for every real estate agent who does business with them. Or, they could give a book to each of their mortgage brokers.

If you have a book on childhood development, what about a baby clothing store? Perhaps the store would cross promote and give a book to each customer who buys a minimum amount of product in their store. This adds value from them to their customers and creates a win/win for you and the store.

In today’s world of writing, marketing and publishing a book, the possibilities are only limited by imagination.

Kathleen, you gave some really great ideas for non-fiction books and how to market them. The seminar idea is excellent.

What about fiction books?

I have not promoted a fiction book. I have however, promoted inspirational books using the same strategies as with my business books.

My recommendation would be to hook in with other fiction writers to see what they do.
