Yes, I have heard some of those noted above growing up...also heard
When my father wrecked my car, and I needed a new one: "can't get blood from a stone"
"If you had to wear your shoes on your head, you would keep them clean"
"Eat everything on your plate, people are starving in China" (so, send the food to china!)
and the one I really remember, I just can't
say it here !!!

When my Mother said to me one day, "Eat your food! Don't you know there are starving kids in China?" I said, "Name one." I couldn't sit down for a whole week.

Another classic, "Don't chew with your mouth open. You sound like a cow with his foot stuck in the mud."

You guys gave me the first laugh of the day!!! Keep em comin!!!! JJ, you haven't changed one bit! I can just imagine the look on your mother's face when you said "name one"....hahahahaha

Chick- didn't know you were from Newfoundland. Would love to hear that accent. I love accents....

Here's my dad: "Jo, if you were a goose, you wouldn't know which way to fly!" HUH??? I felt real bad about the kids in China - I'd start eating that okra and wonder if the little Chinese kids gagged too.

o yeah,

Here's my Mother standing at the top of the stairs to the basement (where Dad was always working on something or other) "JAAAAAAAAAAAAACK, come up here to these kids!!!!!" We'd scatter. Dad never got up the stairs. But once. oooooo, still remember that one.

Big philosophy on life from Dad : "Ain't no one ever said it was fair, JO!".....

We had a little twist on the blood from a stone saying.

My Dad would loan money to some loser and someone would say he would never be repaid because the borrower had nothing then they would add, "You can't get blood from a turnip,"

Daddy would always say, "Yeah, but you can get the turnip."

And he always got repaid too.

Oh yeahhhh....we use to say that about the turnip too...

How bout this one, "Honey, your Mamma didn't raise no fool....no sir ree...you're self made." My Uncle use to tease me with that one. It took years for me to realize it WASN'T a compliment.

Here are a few dandies I heard growing up...

If it ain't soup, its nuts.....

Do you think money grows on trees?...

If it weren't for bad luck we'd have no luck at all...

You seem to be growing in leaps and bounds...

Inch by inch, its a cinch...

If I had a penny for everytime you did that I'd be a rich woman...

Sometimes you're as dumb as a rock...

A penny is as a penny does...

Stop crying, do you want your face to freeze like that?...

Close that door, were you born in a barn...

What, do you think we're made of money child...

and the best one:
Eat your spaghetti there are starving kids in Italy...

Those starving kids sure do get around... [Big Grin]

With five kids always in and out:

"Close the door. We aren't heating the whole neighborhood."

One of Mom's wiser sayings:

"When there's a will, there's a way." I can still hear her saying that. It's partly the reason for my determination in life. I've always had a strong will.

And I've learned by having a couple strong willed children that we aren't the easiest to raise.
