At some point in time, we're headed to San Francisco, will rent a car and drive up the Coast. Any must sees along the way? Of course, I'll be researching yarn shops but am interested in hitting a winery or funky little towns as well. We have no agenda, just the road and ourself to please.

Are you driving up FROM SF, or up TO it?

Maybe 3-4 hours south is the Carmel highlands, absolutely spectacular view of the Pacific coast.

My other recommendation is go an hour(?) W of SF and see Point Reyes. It's just magical there. Harbor Seal rookeries with babies now.

Howdy Meredithbead...sorry not to be clear...we're flying into SF and then driving up the coast to OR and WA.

Thanks for your recommendations; they are now on my list.

Hi Sandra,
There's a lot to see on the Oregon Coast.
Lighthouses, Oregon Coast Aquarium-Newport, many other interesting places.
There are some writers retreats too.

My favorite thing on that drive is the sea lion caves. I forget exactly where they are located, but they are so neat. Microcosms of human culture.

Smile,
You are so right and we go by there so often I forget. The Sea Lion Caves are just north of Florence. They are wonderful. Yahats just north of Sea Lion Caves is a fun, funky little town.

BTW, tons of wineries in Napa and Sonoma, both a short jog from San Francisco. Just drive up the road and stop wherever you feel like it.

Thanks all for the recommendations. Everything sounds wonderful and we're going to have a great time.

Talk upon our return and everyone play nicely while we're gone...grin...

The best winery tour we took was the Berringer tour. It was excellent, beautiful and so informative. The wine is good too!

Thanks Sherri.

speaking of wine...I've recently "discovered" an Australian wine...yellow tail chardonnay...that is *delicious*! I like drinking light colored wine and beer in the summer but dislike sweet wine; this Yellow Tail Chardonnay is wonderful stuff.
