That is good advice to start out writing what you know. I agree with that. If you list all the things you know about, it's probably a lot longer than you initially think it is.

What I did to start out is read every book I could get my hands on about writing. There's lots of good ones out there-- a couple I can recommend are by Kelly James-Enger. She wrote Ready Aim Specialize and Secrets of Six Figure Freelancing. Both are excellant for both beginners and experienced writers alike. Also good is a book on copywriting by Bob Bly (I don't know the title off hand) and also Peter Bowerman wrote The Well-Fed Writer which is good.
