Grammar -- single style quotation marks

Whenever I use quotation marks in dialogue, I use two quotes (i.e. ") to indicate that people are talking, and then I use one quote (i.e. ') to separate a quote within the quote.
A client of mine has informed me that modern formatting permits single style quotations for regular dialogue. I've never heard of this. What happens when there is a quotation within a quotation? Is that also marked off by a single style quote? Sounds confusing to me.

No, I can't do that. The client wants me to format the entire book using single style quotation marks for all dialogue. That's the dilemma. I suppose that I will have to put a quote within a quote in italics or something.

No problem. You were just trying to be helpful and I appreciated that.
I'm a book editor. I'm also an author and I've written two of my own books. I just started editing back in May and I really enjoy it.
The book that I'm doing now is for a client who owns a publishing firm in England. She said that she has seen single style quotation marks in recent works, but I haven't. She wondered if it was a British thing. Hmmm.

Sigrid Check out this link: http://www.economist.com/research/styleGuide/index.cfm?page=805701The Economist is a British publication - may or may not be helpful. I couldn't find anything in Chicago Manual of Style that allowed for single quotation marks for dialogue. I wonder if you could explain to your client that if there are going to be quotes within the quotes, for ease of style and reading you use double quotes for the dialogue and single quotes for quotes within. Of course, you said she's insisting on single quotes throughout....and I gather, the client's the boss, right? ![[Smile]](images/icons/smile.gif) Hmm...now I'll be looking for usage of single quotes only!

Thanks for supplying that link. I've never seen single quotation marks in any of the manuals but that's what the client wants! So, I'm just going to leave the awkward phrasing of a quote within a quote exactly the way that the client phrased it himself.

My pleasure :-) You might also think about advertising in Gigi Miner's newsletter and there is no reason why you can't broadcast your services right here on Boomer Women or on the Lulu Forum section at www.Lulu.com.What I find is that people want to cut corners with editing, which is crazy. It's so important to have an objective and professional editing job. Many people are willing to spend money on cover design or to buy their ISBN or distribution package; however, what's INSIDE is just as important as what's outside! Good luck.
