Somehow I missed the information that you were injured by a drunk driver. Me too....
I was a single mother still recovering from cancer. I had just started a business and was driving 23 mph through a college on my way to an Aunt's house for Christmas. The car was full of my two kids, the dog and Christmas presents. After Christmas I was to meet with the administrators of a hospital to sign a large consulting contract.
A college student and his girlfriend were drinking and smoking pot. They convinced a young man they didn't even know to ride with them. They ran a stop sign at a horrific speed and broadsided me, pushed me through a concrete culvert through a big bar ditch, and rolled me three times into the field. I and the guy who rode home with the driver and his girlfriend were seriously injured, but thankfully both kids and the dog were fine. The driver and his girlfriend were not injured.
The 19 yr. old young man and I were taken to a local hospital then life flighted to a larger hospital. I was unconscious for a week, had multiple injuries, and underwent several surgeries.
The young man had serious head injuries and never recovered consciousness. The next day after I had my first surgery, a nurse aide came to my room and announced flippantly that they had 'unplugged' him.
That's been almost twenty years ago. I have five metal pins from the accident and just added two more in a recent surgery.
Long boring story. Just another example of the havoc drinking and drugs can wreak on lives.

Smile,

What a terrible story! It must've been a real worry for you, given the fact that you had children to take care of. I hope that you are managing all right now, despite the metal pins and residual problems.

Recently, I joined Mothers Against Drunk Drivers again. I was a member of Remove Intoxicated Drivers years ago and as such, I appeared on 20/20 with the man who hit me. Very emotional!

Sending healing vibes your way :-) Sigrid
