MAY DAY, MAYDAY

When they say May Day,
It's the fullness of spring,
North's weather is warming,
Annual buds are flowering,
Robins litter landscapes,
Grass and leaves are green,
Hummingbirds flutter feeders,
Dive-bombing others 'n playing mean.

When they say, Mayday!
They're radioing an alarm,
Signaling for rescue,
There's trouble, there's harm,
Ships and aircraft use this,
An international call,
Send help right away,
And please don't stall.

MOTHERS' GIFTS

They say, "Give a child roots and wings;
And you'll be giving him everything."

Roots and wings she's given us kids,
Glad to be one, of the three she did.

Roots anchor when troubles doth rage,
Wings let us fly above a miserable stage.

A soft-spoken angel, loving as can be,
Ms. Pearl raised brother, sister, and me.

Accountant, baker, cook, doctor, and vet,
Are a few of her hats, we'll never forget.

"Happy Mother's Day," mother, our precious Pearl,
Daddy always bragged you're his kind of girl!

BLOODY BATTLEFIELDS

Memorial Day, is a federal holiday in the USA,
Honoring soldiers who've died in wars, here and away.

An annual event on the last Monday in May,
Began after the 1868 Civil War, they say.

Decoration Day is the commemoration's original name,
Honoring dead soldiers' fighting for freedom's gain.

Celebrations include placing flowers on heroes graves,
Those military men and women, whose life they gave.

More than a million Americans have died in war,
Protecting liberty and justice, homeland and more.

Killed by enemy "atrocities" these women, these men,
Are deserving of honor by every being and friend.

So let buglers play taps and flags fly at half-staff,
Honoring heroic sacrifices as soldiers' in graves, amass.

Wonderful, Jabber! Thanks for reminding us of the real meaning of this holiday. No one calls it Decoration Day anymore, it seems; but when I was a kid my Dad taught me that that - decorating the graves of our fallen - was what the Memorial day holiday was all about.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY

Here's to a world of precious dads,
Raising their baby lasses and lads.

Buckling-down and toeing the mark,
Not acting like a heel or a frolicking lark.

Hardship and parenting go hand-n-hand,
Children rebel and frequently grandstand.

Father's Day honors to hardworking men,
Loyal spouses, dads, providers and friends.

To guys' strong as a bull, gentle as a lamb,
The rock on which a family doth stand.

Men of wisdom, forgiveness and grace,
Head-of-the-household behind a smiling face!

4th of JULY CELEBRATIONS

Citizens' are celebrating Independence Day,
Here and there all across the USA.

Village and town Parks host festivities galore,
Americans will be partying till they can't party no more.

Our forefathers left us with a precious land,
Liberty and justice is ever so grand!

Carnivals, parades and family picnics they'll be,
With service clubs financially backing some of these.

Lawn chairs will line parade routes, end-to-end,
Spectators patiently waiting for parades to begin.

Firemen, police, and soldiers gather in groups,
To march with EMTS, equipment, and military troops.

"Shriners" in go-carts come weaving in-n-out,
Fraternal masons know partying, of that there's no doubt.

Then horses and buggies come jogging through town,
Metal shoes clicking pavement in a rhythmic sound.

The Lions Club and the Loyal Order of Moose,
In high-stepping form are bringing-up the caboose.

As the parades pass-by, they're over and done,
Crowds move to the parks, till the setting sun.

Fireworks are exploding, coloring the sky,
Folks 'll ooh and aah, then say good-bye.

Yes, Jabber, that's exactly what the 4th of July was like when i was a kid. We kids would decorate our bikes, our wagons, even our pets. And all would join the parade. Then in the evening we'd walk down to the beach, to watch the Village's fireworks, which were set off on the pier...

These were days pre-air conditioning - or at least it wasn't anticipated except in public buildings like the movie theaters, professional office buildings and the larger stores. So we also looked forward to running though sprinklers, jumping into lakes, pools, or playing games involving water balloons.

Thanks again for your poetic memories.

LABOR DAY

Imagine in a perfect world,
How awesome it would be,
A global workforce laboring,
With passion, wholeheartedly.

They'd be looking forward to Monday,
With nobody dreading their plight,
Enjoying all their weekends,
'Cause weekdays are a delight.

If each piece of work brought joy,
It'd be an easy thing to face,
For every girl and every boy,
To work in a brand new place.

If laboring were totally fun,
Days off would be a bore,
'N folks would anxiously work,
At jobs they love and adore.

Some pundits say, Labor Day,
Is the "unofficial end of summer,"
But if you're anything like me,
Ya think that's a real bummer.

Food for thought, Jabber. Some say that if work was as enjoyable as recreation, it wouldn't be work. Don't know if that's a good thing or not.

As for me (working from home), Labor Day was just another day at the office... LOL!
