My mom had just acquired my new stepfather, who is British, and spend some of his youth in Australia. I think I heard the song at school, and came home asking him about it, and he was familiar with it. However, his interpretation was that Waltzing Matilda was a ghost of a lost lady. Soon after, the Beatles ruled my day, and She Loves You yeah yeah yeah consumed my head.
