My husband and I are seriously considering adoption of a 13 year old boy, who is currently in foster care with our neighbors. Anyone had experience with this. Quite frankly, I am surprised that I really want to do this. Any comment would be appreciated.

God must have his hand on your hearts...

What motivates you to want to adopt this child?

I wish you luck and hope that all turns out well.

While I don't have any experience with adoption, I did find this article about adopting when you are over 50 that might prove interesting to you. Go HERE to read. And also, here is a web site that has tons of info, even a section on adopting from foster care. How cool is that?

I'm 52 and my youngest son is 14. If your not used to teenagers it can be a tough go at first. They are in a whole different world. But they need good adult role models in their life at this time more than people would think.

If he is young for his age this may work out better. When they are old beyond their years it can be a real challenge whether they are adopted or not.

I think you are wonderful to even consider this as 13 is not the easiest age. Don't let your age bother you. My teens are a challenge but one positive is they keep me young.

Welcome to BWS. If you are seriously contemplating the adoption of this child, the only consideration in this matter really would be whether the child feels the same way about it. Everything else that comes with raising a teenager will rest entirely on the love you and your husband give him.

I have taught several adopted children.some of those in further education where they were in special needs classes.

One Downs student who a seasoned foster mother chose to adopt after having many children through the years. This was a sucess.
I have also seen unhappy situations .
Teenage years can bring additional stresses to the child. As puberty arrives.
Have you reared children?
Would there be family members who would be there to also help you and this boy?
Looking forward to hearing what others say .

Mountain, LOVE conquers all. If he wants to be adopted by you and you are willing how could it be anything but wonderful. Nothing is perfect so expect some bad times with the good, all parents have this even with our natural children.

Thanks to all of you who replied to my question. I can't say exactly what motivates me to want to adopt this child. I was instantly drawn to him, as was my husband. I have been trying to be more tuned into my feelings and listen to my heart, and the idea of adoptions came to me and would not leave, so I spoke to my husband about it, and he instantly said yes, I think we should try to adopt him also. I was blown away! I raised 2 children grown now. My husband has 3 children all grown in England. The grown children are supportive. We have a 14 year old Granddaughter who has spent all school vacations with us since she was 2. Anyway we are going to start class's Aug. 6.
