Dioxins released...

Dioxin chemcials cause breast cancer and other cancers. Dioxins are released when plastic bottles are filled with water and put in the freezer; plastic wraps, like Saran, are put over food to be cooked in the microwave; and plastic containers are put in the microwave oven. I've been storing food in those cheap, plastic containers for years. I've even frozen sauces, etc. in them. Guess I'll stop that, asap. I've never heated anything in the microwave in them. But if plastic bottles shouldn't be put in the freezer, it follows that food shouldn't be frozen in plastic containers, either. What say U? Ciao for now, b. rose

BRose, this is good information. I have plastic bottles filled with water in my freezer in case I lose power during a hurricane. I use them to keep whatever is in the fridge fresh for a least a day until I can get ice. I've never used plastic for any of the uses you stated. How happy am I!

Really? No wonder the incidence of cancer is increasing at an alarming rate, with no 'public' explanation of why it is so. What about warming a baby's bottle (plastic) in the microwave? This is a common practice in Australia, I'm horrified! Thank you so much for this information.

dear bws... I received the above info in my email yesterday. I should've researched it before I shared it with my favorite site. I did not! This is apparently a hoax. I researched the subject today and discovered that plastics do NOT put out dioxins!!! Freezing water in plastic bottles does NOT cause the above mentioned problems. I apologize. I was WRONG. Sorry for the unnecessary alarm. I'm telling you folks, I'm getting so I don't believe anybody or anything, anymore. GOSH... b. rose

It's okay, BRose. Better safe than sorry. I appreciate it.

Now they are saying it's bad to drink bottled water that has been left out in the heat.

I have heard from several sources that you also should reuse plastic water bottles too many times and that it breaks down over time (maybe from temperature changes) so it's better to buy heavy duty plastic bottle designed for re-use. Does anyone know if that is a hoax too? I hate throwing those bottles away so quickly but also don't want to reuse them if it's a health risk!

I too have researched this and found it to be a hoax, but again, better to know than to be sorry. Formaldehyde on the other hand is a known carcinogen and you will find it in many bath and body products, shampoos, lotions and makeup. You can go to ewg.org and type in for yourself the brand of makeup you use or type of lotion. You wil be surprised. I was! I have found a company that has these products without the toxins and have switched stores. I am so glad I did. Live with passion, nursenorris

News releases about the dangers of plastic bottle usage, surfaced again this week. Research tells me that the only reason reusing plastic bottles could be troublesome, is if they are not cleaned sufficiently. Bacteria thrive in warm, moist places. If they're cleaned good, there should NOT be a problem, so say the experts. (snopes.com) reports that that toxin thing is false accusation. nursenorris, we've heard for years that makeup has unhealthy ingredients. Then again, so does soap, deodorant, etc, etc..... Everyday another reporter comes up a new health hazard concerning another commonly used product. Guess we'll just have to use our best, individual discretion. Blessings and prayers

When I was visiting my Mom last month I noticed that at the kitchen sink she had the same bottle brush she used for my younger brother's baby bottles. He is now nearly 50! What about that brush? Yikes. I have a friend who is an environmentalist. He is a PhD research scientist: hydrogeologist. At age 50 something he had his first child with his younger girlfriend. When I was visiting them 2 summers ago, he picked up a plastic baby toy off his kitchen floor. He said, paraphrase, "I don't like plastic, but friends give us toys...I don't know what to do with them." I wanted to ask him the whys of not having plastic: is it due to not being biodegradable or is it unfit for human consumption? He lives almost off the grid and a lot off his land. There is just too much to know that he knows to begin to even know what to ask.

Chatty, Bottle brushes are excellent. Dotsie, There have been a lot of toy recalls recently. They say it's the lead in the paint? But who knows? Princess, Your friend sounds like an interesting person!

boomers, I know 2 so-called "freebees" that are very expensive. Don't believe radio or internet ads that say (free), because they cost large sums of money! Radio ads about getting rid of wrinkles are NOT free; and, they're a pain in the "you know" to cancel. Same for "free" credit score ratings. They're NOT free; and, you have to keep following up to make sure the charges have been refunded, as promised! These ads should be catagorized as "false advertising." But they are NOT. The BBB ought to climb all over these con games! Prayers, b. rose

Chatty, I switched subjects here and don't know why. You're right about plastics being non-biodegradable. But then again they bury steel drums filled with all sort of toxins. And you have to wonder why? I didn't mean to get off the central issue. Sorry! Dotsie, Credit was involved because of "free sample" shipping. But companies try to hook you in before the trial period is up. Suppositively, there are 30 days to decide whether the product lives up to the hype. But they bill prospective customers in 25 days, and hope you won't notice. In that "credit rating" incident, the report is free but the score release is costly. They say it'll be $1.00 but charge up to $29.95 a month. It's a huge hoax. I just thought if I shared the experiences, other boomers would avoid the distorted bait.

Well Dotsie, Apparently, everything's a scam; but, who knew. The trial is free but the shipping costs. There's a way to pay for stuff on the Net by using an instant card number. However, I haven't taken the time to learn the process, yet. We have the safeguards, as far as the card is concerned. But once they get you hooked, then they add unforeseen charges. I managed to get it all refunded, but that was a pain the neck. Misleading advertisements should be cut off at the roots. Everytime I hear one of those ads on the radio, I cringe. It's a way to get big bucks out of unsuspecting folks. And that ticks me off!!! When you hear, FREE, don't believe it! It's a con!
