For those of you who live in town with our parents:

Do you go to the doctors with them and sit in on the appointments?

This is so time consuming, but at times necessary.

I have 2 more years of taking my children to the pediatrician and now I'll be swapping that for parents appts. I won't complain too much. I'm glad they are still with us. What I wouldn't give to take my mom to the doctors! [Wink]

I think it's a good idea for just about anyone to go to the doctor in pairs. How many times do you go and forget to ask something or be uncertain what the doctor said about some issue?
It seems to happen to all of us and if there is someone there who is less nervous about what is happening, it makes remembering the important things easier.
Just my take.

Smile, you make an excellent point. Age doesn't really matter. I went to a couple of my sister's appointments with her this summer while she was being treated for cancer. I took notes while she talked. It's funny how we heard things differently.

When I take my almost 90-year-old mother to her doctor appointments, I always go in with her. I need to know what's going on anyway so I might as well hear it from the horse's mouth. Depending on what kind of an exam it is, I sometimrs leave the room and then come back in when it's time to talk about the diagnosis, etc.

Yes, it's time consuming, but it is part of what we boomer women do. [Smile]

Great idea Smile and this reminds me of something I saw posted somewhere in here earlier about when the children become the parents. My mother always went to the doctor with me when I was a kid. So what the hey? The tables have turned. [Smile]

Everyone needs an advocate at the doctor's office or hospital, especially with our older parents. I went with them when I could (I have a full-time job) because they sometimes did not get the right information and I think sometimes, healthcare professionals don't treat older folks the way they should. I was glad to go and I'm sure they were glad I was there.

LadyDi? watch out queen jawjaw, you have royal company.

Lady, we have a resident queen in these forums. She's the queen of experiences. I know she'll be glad to have you here.

I'm with you. More ears at these appts. are best for everyone included.

When my mom was sick with cancer her doctor sometimes had to put up with 3-4 of us. And we love to ask questions. COme to think of it...he's no longer practicing. He's now in research. [Eek!]

Yes, I go...with my father, my great aunt and my great uncle...and yes, I am in the room all the time. I took my father to a surgeon Friday for a consult regarding a rather large hernia...and when the doc got ready to examine him, he asked if I wanted to be excused. I said no...I will just turn away until you are done. Dad and I have seen everything each other has over these last few years between his and my own operations and illneses. I joked with Dad after my bypass that he didn't have to leave the room because he was going to have to take care of me at home and besides, there wasn't anything I had now that I didn't have when he bathed me as a child...it's all just bigger and hanging lower!!

Yes, Dotsie, when I go with Mom, I go in with her. She talks so much she doesn't listen to what the doctor says so I have to be the ears. And going in pairs does help no matter what the age. Dr. visits can be frightening. My sister went with me during my cancer visits and I was amazed at what she heard and I didn't. It was invaluable.

Elsie, I had the same experience when sitting in on my sister's visits.
