Do you remember when we paid 25 cents a gallon for gas? Now in some places, it is as high as 4.00/gallon. I would imagine that motorcycle sales are up and that's disturbing to me because of the motorcycle-car accidents and deaths, although I love riding them.

As an author who travels for book signings, and a speaker who's venues are often out of state, this gas hike has me troubled. I don't want to raise my fees, but I may have too.

Is anyone else experiencing the gas crunch? Horses are starting to look really good to me.

You're darn right it hurts. In my previous job that I left in August, I traveled everyday through 5 or 6 towns and cities doing visiting nursing. I had to fill the tank twice a week and I could have cried each time. Now, thankfully, I don't travel as much but it seems like the most recent gas hike is happening every day that I see another price sign...it never stops! Most people go with it out of no other choice. I wish they'd let snowmobiles on the road here in Maine. Let's just have 3 days of NO ONE in the country leaving home. Do you think that would speak? What are they going to do....fire us? No stores would have sales, no gas stations would sell...nothing...nada. I think it's a good idea

I remember the gas stations in my home town having price wars.

Luckily, it's ok to admit my age in this group.

I'd also love to sell at more craft fairs out of my immediate geographical area -- y'know, just hit the road and sell all over the country -- but in a minivan??? (which I need to haul my stuff.)

Even San Francisco area, 500 miles north of here -- by the time I paid for the gas, cheap hotels and craft fair fees, I'd be out $1,000 before I even made one penny. Too bad, because I enjoy road trips. I only went to one show 300 miles from here all last year.

Meredith, its a shame you don't have someone you know that would share the trip, even if they didn't do jewelry, maybe some other craft? And they could share all the expenses?

I know, I know...easier said than done, right?

I'm not a traveler, but I do enough driving that I've noticed the gas price increases over the years. I try to do all my errands in one day with no backtracking to save gas. The highest price I saw today was $3.12. That's enough to keep me home.

Oh Lordy, we jumped here in Vegas .08 cents in two day!! Running near $4.00 a gallon. I am riding my bike more and more lately for short errands. And like Saundra I make a circle doing all errands farther away, at the same time, one after the other.

Jawjaw, the problem with crafters is -- we all haul tons of STUFF. I have a 10' tent, a 9' umbrella w. stand, and 400 lbs. of wood and pegboard display. That's not counting the jewelry. Everyone has tents, tables etc. My car is pretty packed, and so is everyone else's. Couldn't really carpool to a fair. And jewelers have a small set-up compared to painters and potters.

Then what you need is a sponsor who PAYS to have you plaster their name on a van that you drive across America while you sell your jewelry. Uh huh...sure nuff. If you find one, lemme know. I want one too.
