Taming the menopausal beast

About six months ago, I started getting night sweats and getting up six-eight times during the night either to go to bathroom or with an anxious feeling. The doctor put me on HRT and water pills. This helped some. A few months later, she put me on a diet and I've lost some weight, plus I did an attitude adjustment. At the time all this was happening, I was drowning in self-pity for things. I finally put my foot down and started making changes in my life mentally and physically.
Today, I sleep soundly, I don't take any medications and I am happy. I have stepped out of my comfort zone and made myself do things that normally I was too shy or self-conscious to do. I am loving this year for the first time in a long time. I don't know if I was experiencing menopause, the doctor said my blood work showed I was, but If so, It is either over or hibernating.

Hi..I just found this board. I hope you don't mind me jumping in here but since I've been there, done that..waiting for the t-shirt. I found a wonderful book, well worth the price!! (I don't usually recommend books on a non-book forum). The name of the book is "The Change of Life Diet and Cookbook" by Elaine Magee. I'm not sure which I dislike worse..Dieting or Cooking but even I can follow this. In her book, you'll find ways to help you with night sweats, hot flashes, libido, osteoporosis..
One chapter that's really a hoot is "What Was I Saying? I Must Be Having One of Those Menopause Moments." Elaine follows up with foods that will boost your brain power.
How about "Hot Flash Mocha-chino" or "Frozen Fruit Freeze?" How about "Banana Coffee Cake with Chocolate Chip Stuesel?"
Hope this helps

This is another subject I can relate to and it is an interesting and controversial one.
When menopause began for me, I knew soon that that's what was going on. For awhile, 1-2 years the night sweats, the nervousness and such really disrupted my life and my husband's.
Later, when I started taking HRT, my life totally changed. I felt better, wanted to do more and as you mentioned my attitde got much more positive.
I am so glad that you brought this subject up. In most cases, unless there is a heredity factor or a serious health concern, women can choose to do just about anything they want to. It's a wonderful feeling to know that the 'doors' of life have not been closed; so much of life is waiting just for you!

I went off HRT after hearing about the dangers or warnings and should be just about finished with menopause anyway. (They call it menopause because it makes men pause and say, Ohhh). I started vitamin therapy. E helps with the night sweats, flaxseed oil helps everything!, fish oil and niacin help cholesterol levels and primrose evening oil is supposed to help with water retention, etc. (can't take it as it gives me really strange dreams). I also started using the South Beach Diet. I've lost 14 lbs. and have so much energy. I feel better than I've felt in years and I'm looking pretty darn good too!

JawJaw,
Your deal about running out of hormones and it not bothering you--I laughed so hard, tears formed!
You need to do 'stand-up'comedy--you're that good! And I mean it!

she shot him huh? you say that like it's a bad thing..teehee... A guy I work with is doing the SB diet and he says he tried the AT one but liked this one better. Doc says I have high cholestrol too. First time for me ever! That bothers me. Well that plus the 30+ lbs I've gained since I quit smoking last year. Jump out of bed? ha! I wish! JJ

My doctor put me on Lipitor because he said I wasn't the type to change my lifestyle I would be walking along and my right leg would give out and I would have a really hard time walking on it. Then, I'm watching television and the ad comes on about Lipitor and a serious side affect being muscle weakness! My doctor said 1000mg of Fish Oil (twice a day) and 500mg of Niacin (twice a day) has proven to work, lowering cholesterol. Exercise is important too...something I don't do but need to. When you take the Niacin, be sure to also take tylenol. It will keep the "body burn" to a minimum.

JJ - did you ever try the soy/black cohosh ? I asked my pharmacist this morning if I really needed to re-fill my estrotest (estrogen) ( my pomeranian ate the whole bottle 3 weeks ago today ) since my only symptoms were a few very minor night flashes -- not really sweats -- just warm for a few minutes here and there -- she said the estrogen thing was basically for the symtoms of menopause and if I could live with them then maybe it would be for the best as estrogen can mess with your heart BUT -- I should make sure to take calcium, vit D, and magnesium to combat osteoporosis and other "stuff" AND -- that its the black cohosh that prevents the night sweats -- not so much the soy -- BUT -- I should get my liver panel blood work done every so often cuz it can mess with the liver SOOOOOooo -- as long as I can keep off the FBI's most dangerous list -- I'm not going back on estrogen !! p.s. -- my pom is okay so far

First..thanks for the laugh, Jawjaw..Still trying how to quote a message.
I guess I was kind of busy when I stopped as I didn't even think about it until the doctor asked when was my last period. No Clue!! One less problem I had to deal with :-) I was 35..37 maybe..no hot flashes (cold chills), didnt think I had the mood swings until my son happened to walk in while I was talking to a friend..his comment.."Yeah, easy for her..'ell on us!"

Yeah I did it..quoted..Patting me on the back.
I've notice that, too..or you hear "May cause.." The cure(side affects) is worse than the disease..
I remember going to a free Weight Loss hypnosis with a friend. The speaker was going to hypnotize us to loose weight but first he had to sell us his books, vitamins, and "all natural protein drink." My friend's a diabetic and wanted to know if it was safe for her and what was the ingredients, so I asked. The speaker said,"It's perfectly safe, all natural." Since that wasn't the answer I wanted, I asked again but told him that arsenic is all natural but I wouldn't suggest digesting it. I'm bad, I'm bad..lol

Chatty, amen to that! I went to my gyn and mentioned that my fingers swelled ON OCCASION and it felt funny. Told her I wasn' use to it and didn't like it. She started writing me an RX for a water pill.
I told her I didn't want it. I was only mentioning it. It wasn't that big a deal. That scared me.

Then there's the trickle down effect. The water pills produce potassium deficiency which results in dizziness and leg cramps then it slow you heartbeat and even induces heart attack like symptoms and no telling what else. Then you get medications for those things and they cause other things and pretty soon you're up to ten or twelve pills a day then to twenty or more. And the drug companies get rich and you get sicker and we all get poorer. All that from puffy fingers. Good for you Dots. Skip the drugs and hold your hands up in the air so the blood will drain back to your heart. (Of course you have to watch out for that too cause if you're not careful JJ will come along and pull your arm down and we all know that that leads to smile

Do any of you ladies know anyone with hypercasinoptia? I would like to hang out with them for a while to become infected myself. I need a new car. I wonder if there are levels of severity. Like a minor case you spit pennies onto the more serious cases where you are spitting out $10 silver coins. I need the large denominations, so lead me to the sickest hypercasinoptians you might know. Jaw Jaw, did you ever get your eyes checked?

Well given my latest news that I have the estrogen level of a post menopausal woman, I am tickled to see that so many of you are living happy, non-murderous lives after menopause. I am on a natural estrogen... but have only been on it a week or so now. I can tell that it's beginning to work because I've only thought about cutting up my husband into tiny, bite-sized pieces about four times today. That's gotta be good, right? Frankly, I am so sick and tired of feeling sick and tired that I would eat frog eggs for breakfast everyday if I thought it would help. My question to those of you that have been down this road is: Will I ever feel like I want to have my tractor cranked again??? My husband keeps trying to jumpstart mine and I always send him packing. I haven't wanted to plow in a long, long time, so I'm hoping the estrogen will work some sort of farm magic for me.

Still laughing, still laughing, bubble snot from the nose laughing....pulled out a gun and shot him!!!!! One more sign of menopause I guess, this black sense of humor of mine....I find absolutely hysterical the most inappropriate of things. But I can remember the night before my hysterectomy and my husband trying to be supportive by saying that maybe the hysterectomy would restore me to my "old pleasant self"....fortunately for him there was enough pre-surgical valium in me to stop an elephant!

I think that aforementioned cat outfit is mine I've always considered myself a sex symbol. Now I'm a sex symbol for balding overweight nerdy middle-aged (or older!) guys. We takes what we can get haha.
