Magazine recognition

Magazine recognition - 05/15/08 02:25 AM

We made New Mexico Magazine this month!

However, here's the story why we are both glad and a tad bit frustrated...

Back in January they asked us for pics/info etc for their June issue's Unique Boutique section. We sent them LOTS of pics.

About three months later, the said they ran out of room and we would not be in. I thanked them and said we understood.

NOW, we get several orders in one day (yes, happy 'bout that!) but we were very unprepared! Customers say "Oh, we read about you in the June issue, blah, blah, blah) Yes, I wrote and thanked them, yet mentioned our unpreparedness.

I would LOVE to have been ready. But oh well..them's the breaks I guess!

Congrats!! Yes, the media is unpredictable and you never believe it until you see it with your own eyes. When I had my sleepwear biz (sold it in March), Oprah actually taped a live segment on sleep issues that included our sleepwear. It was set to run last June so we stocked up on inventory. Then the show ran too long, and guess what got cut?

We were also supposed to be in Health Magazine in March of this year for our Cleavage Coolers; sent them samples and pics. Then, they emailed and said it won't be until August now. Like I said, believe it when you see it in print.

That is so cool that you made it in. Are they an online magazine, and if so, can you post the link to your article?

There is a link to www.nmmagazine.com but you cannot access the Unique Boutique page. Only some pages are readable!

I picked up a copy today and it looks FABULOUS! They used our pics and did a wonderful job.

Woooooo Hoooooooo!!

Chatty, I sold my Rick and June biz in March. However, I sent all kinds of samples for media/press that the new owner will be able to reap the benefits from - - if the stories ever run...

Good going Di!!!

This is fantastic. And may other media attention come as a result. This often happens.

That's great news! And many of those will turn in to repeat customers.

Yes indeed. The last time we were in the same magazine two years ago, one of the wholesale accounts we got is still buying.

Kathy, why did you sell Rick and June??

Re: Magazine recognition - 05/21/08 03:46 PM

Rick and June started with that little book and evolved into the wicking sleepwear. It grew so fast that my home was taken over by inventory. We had about $20,000 worth of jammies and gifts coming in and going out regularly, so it got to the point where I either needed to get another place to store it and work, or sell the business.

When I evaluated my life and my needs (and my family's needs), I realized how tied down I was with having to pack and ship items every day. I had a part time employee, but it still took lots of my time. My future plans involve carefree traveling, and that just wasn't possible with the biz growing so quickly.

Because I was also doing website development this whole time, I decided to focus on that. It's a portable type of work and I can take it with me when I travel, if necessary. So I listed Rick and June with a business broker. I had a couple of offers and accepted one in February and the business closed escrow in March.

The new owner has named it Sleep Dry, Stay Cool and she carries most of the same products I had, and plans to add more as she eases into things.

I have zero regrets about selling it. As soon as I made the decision, my web business picked up greatly. I'm working on one new website and 3 redesigns right now, and I couldn't have handled all that if I still had Rick and June.

Plus, it gave me a little extra money, which worked out well since we have a big Ireland trip planned for this summer. I was also able to buy a new laptop computer so I can take my web biz with me, and we just ordered new living room furniture too! Fun, huh? A big chunk of the money is being set aside for a new deck that we'll need by next summer, and I hope to have some to build up my IRA a little too. All in all, a very good move for me.

Congrats, Di... I'm sure you welcome the biz, no matter whether prepared or not. I think it's exciting for you, no?

Yes, very exciting. Just got more orders and wholesale inquiries today!

I'll tell you, though. It's all in the photography. The issue two years ago was horrible. They asked us to send product and the photographer was NOT good.

THIS time, we sent our own. And, if anyone has seen our website, you'll see what a great job my webmaster/husband does on photos.

He's the best!!
