Guardian angels?

Guardian angels? - 10/01/06 02:31 PM

What do you believe about guardian angels?

Are they different than the Holy Spirit?

Are they the spirits of loved ones who have already passed on?

I'm interested in hearing what everyone has to say.

I believe exactly as my Church teaches (which is Biblical). Everyone has a Guardian Angel (Matt. 18:10). Angels are spiritual beings created by God, therefore, they are not the Holy Spirit, who is the third Person of the Blessed Trinity. Angels are messengers and protectors of God's people. They are also not the spirits of dead loved ones. Human have souls, whch live eternally with, or away from, God. Angels are created as such and will always be angels.
After they were created, Lucifer, an archangel, rebelled against God and His Kingdom ("I will not serve") and was cast down with a third of the heavenly host, by Michael and his host ( Rev. 12: 7-9)

I believe that a person's conscience is a guardian angel. I also believe that we each have a spirit out there looking out for our best interests and they speak to us through our intuition, conscience and emotions.

I absolutely believe in guardian angels. I believe the same as Bluebird, except that I believe that we each have not just one but TWO guardian angels. And I'm sure that mine have rescued me from more near misses than I could possibly imagine, though there are a few that I clearly remember as being too close for comfort and/or coincidence...like the car going through a red light at a busy intersection and stopping mere INCHES away from me.

I make it a point to regularly not only thank God for the guardian angels He's assigned to watch over and help me, I also thank my guardian angels for all their vigilance and companionship.

Re: Guardian angels? - 10/02/06 01:06 PM

Blue and Eagle, I ws taught as a child the same information you shared above, but I've never held tight to the idea of my guardian angels watching over me. And now I feel badly because I didn't really teach my kids to have faith in their guardian angles. It's not too late.

Anyone know a good book about angels? I want to learn a little more about this part of my faith.

Re: Guardian angels? - 10/02/06 08:16 PM

I learned this prayer as a child and say it each morning:

Angel of God my guardian dear,
for whom Gods love permits thee here.
Ever this day be at my side,
to live, to love, to be my guide...
Amen

Re: Guardian angels? - 10/02/06 08:47 PM

I always wondered if mine was someone I had known that had passed away or just someone God picked for me,and when do they become our Guardian Angels, at birth or sometime after?....Interesting thought!

I think they are "assigned" at the moment of our conception... new life, new soul, and those angels need something to do!!

I still say that prayer, Chatty.

Re: Guardian angels? - 10/03/06 11:12 PM

I believe as Blue stated, which is what I learned in Catechism. I love that prayer Chatty, and thank you for posting it. When I read it I realized I had learned that poem too, in parochial school. I think that our conscience is different than a guardian angel: our conscience serves to guide us in right vs. wrong and is a funciton of the mind. Many sociopaths believe in guardian angels, yet have no conscience. I think that our GA can speak to us through intuition. Also, like Anne said, I think we can have an image of our GA appear to us. Dotsie, I don't think you have faith in the GA but in GOD who works through GAs. About 9 years ago I was really struggling with who I am and why I am here. I was not in touch with my whole history, because much of my childhood I had deliberately suppressed in the recesses of my mind. Meanwhile, my mother had sent me my childhood photo album. I had it for weeks, afraid to open it. Who knew what the pics might reveal? Yet, I was drawn to it. I asked God for general guidance one night. In the middle of the night, I had a dream that was more like a vision. 2 ANGELS appeared by my bed, not with halos and wings, but recognizable as angels nonetheless. "I am Michael" one said. "I am Odetta" the other said. Then Odetta said, "We are always with you." And Michael said, "Go without fear." I woke up my husband, "Hey, did you hear that? The angels Michael and Odetta were here. They told me to go without fear." (He had not heard, but believed me.) What, where was I to go without fear? Well, not long after that, I opened my photo album, and started on the long hard journey of getting in touch with my childhood. Then, I started working on my book, and you know the rest. I had never heard of Odetta, so a friend of mine more literate of the Bible looked up Odetta, and told me that she is mentioned twice as an ANGEL! (Blue, maybe you know more?) Anyway, these were not spirits that had passed on, but real true Guardian Angels. I felt blessed.

I just looked in my concordance and did not see any name or word that resembled Odetta.
Now, Michael, I have a great devotion for!

Re: Guardian angels? - 10/04/06 02:35 PM

Just thought I would share the St. Michael prayer that I say every day. He's not a Guardian angel in the way we think of them, but he is the guardian and defender of God's people! He is powerful! There are many versions of this prayer, with slightly different words, but they all say the same thing:

St. Michael, the Archangel, defend us in the battle
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray
And do thou, oh Prince of the Heavenly Host,
By the power of God,
Thrust into hell, satan and all the evil spirits
Who prowl about the world, seeking the ruin of souls

If I'm praying for a particular person who is battling evil, I will use their name at the end - "seeking the ruin of Bob's soul"

I learned recently that St. Raphael's (another archangel) name means "medicine of God". I now call on him when someone has a health issue. These angels never work outside of God's will and He created them to help us, so why not ask them to do what they were created to do?

Re: Guardian angels? - 10/04/06 02:53 PM

Hi Blue, thanks for looking, it may have been Odedda. I know that friend looked, and she found 2 references, but I don't remember the details. As for spirits of those who have passed on, I have had visitations in times of the worst stress. These visits were for guidance (which I did not take and got into trouble) but I did not sense them as guardian angels. Michael and Odetta were definitly telling me a guardian message: we are with you always. So I believe that our guardian angels are with us always, and yes, call on them, because they want to help.

Re: Guardian angels? - 10/04/06 02:59 PM

I just realized that I looked in a non-Catholic concordance. The Catholic Bible has several more books in it and it may be in one of those. I beleive the only place Raphael is mentioned is in Tobit, which the Protestant Bibles removed. I'll look further.

Re: Guardian angels? - 10/04/06 03:12 PM

The only other angelic names I could find (in books that are considered by most as non-canonical) are Uriel and Jeremiel.

Re: Guardian angels? - 10/04/06 03:21 PM

I've been looking up the name Odetta - the closest thing I could find is Odessa, which means "bringer of light"...since everything in creation has its own name, each guardian angel must have his/her own special name as well. And if there is at least one (maybe two) guardian angels assigned to each living person, then there must be billions of angels (and therefore billions of special names), not all of which will be in the Bible. Claim Odetta and Michael as your own special guardians since it's God who has given them especially and exclusively to you!!

Re: Guardian angels? - 10/04/06 05:16 PM

There ya go!! Beautifully said, Eagle.

All this talk about Guardian angels has caused the enemy to try to overpower mine. I was just taking my morning walk and I was on one of the busier, paved roads. I like to walk on the pavement if no one is coming (I walk facing traffic) and when I see someone coming, I move off to the gravel shoulder. I saw a pick up coming, so I moved over. As I moved off the road, he did, too. It didn't seem like he was going fast so I thought he was going to slowly pull over to ask me directions. Always cautious, I moved further off the road and as I did, he moved further off and picked up speed. It really looked like he was purposely going to run me down! I got really nervous and put my hand up and said "whoa" and what seemed like the last minute, he swerved back onto the paved part. He didn't even pull off and say "I'm sorry" or offer any explanantion of accidentally losing control. I honestly felt like he was planning on hitting me head on and something made him change his mind.

Scary Blue!!!!

I believe our Guardian Angels are given to us to help guide us along the path we were meant to take. I could feel them while I was writing my book. I mean...FEEL THEM! It scared me at times.

I prayed for a long time one day and focused on my angels. I asked their names and this was what I was given: Belinda and Sherman. Not two names I would think of. Belinda was given knowledge in dv and Sherman was there to help me financially. Sherman must be frustrated as I spend money on shoes!

I envision another Guardian Angel around you, Dianne. She's very happy about all the shoes you've bought. She has an odd name for an angel - Nine West.

Re: Guardian angels? - 10/04/06 07:15 PM

Wow, Blue, what was that all about? I am so glad that he swerved at the last minute. I have heard of the name Odessa, and isn't it funny that the name means "bringer of light" and I sign Love & Light? I did not know until now what the name means! I once thought I had made a mistake and mis heard Odessa as "Odetta" but I'm still pretty sure it's Odetta. But I had never heard that name before the dream/vision, either. dianne, Sherman, are you sure it's not "shoeman?"

Re: Guardian angels? - 10/04/06 07:18 PM

"Shoeman" makes more sense to me...God has such a wonderful sense of humour - I wouldn't put it past Him to send you (Dianne) someone whose name MIGHT sound like "Shoeman", just to keep you on your toes. LOL.

Shoeman!!! I love it!

You gals have me laughing out loud...not something I do often! Nine West~Shoeman! Both work for me. It's his fault that I'm addicted to shoes.

Re: Guardian angels? - 12/14/06 08:44 PM

I have been in and out this room several times and never noticed this post before.

personaly i am with bluebird on this one. Imagine how cool or special we are that we get special apponted agenst of god for our wellfair. Now i feel special rememberring that.

To my best ability to work it out angels have never been human but guides at times have or can be human couse their life experience can be usfull to us at diffrent points in our life. So sometimes guides can come and go but like a gardian angel you get one special guide that stayes with you for most or all of your life.

Also their some type of supervision angel , if we think of it in human terms like the angel in charge of the relashionship department, or in dianne's case shoe dept etc. Then out own private angel get's specalist consiltasion from the angel in charge of a spacifik energy vibrasion whatever that may be.

I think the logik goes if their is the angel in charge of a creative aspect or realm then they carrie a diffrent type of eneergy from the angel in charge of the action realm. and so on. so their the types of general managers of that department pheewww lol

Their is ment to be a type of hirarchy within the angelic realm, all from the higest and most powerfull of the angels filter informasion dowen to our personal angels. Their ment to be a time change between their realms and ours that allows them to see into our future for events that seem likly to happen....hence lynnes pre-guidance telling her not to fear, they already know what was likly to happen.

I don't know what it like in your part of the country but heer it's near freezing with a big bitter wind near constant graw skies and lots and lots of rain lol.

the worst of it for me and i know some love the dark nights and think their cosy but it gets dark by 5 in the evening.

I once got told along time ago and it still brings me comphort to this day is that figritivly (dark night of soul) and in actuality that when it's most dark the angels draw even closer to lighten us or our load with the power of their love. It makes it a bit easier to cope with the dark at this time of the year
