Plug-in air freshners...? - 02/18/08 03:19 PM

Did any of you hear about plug-in air freshners causing house fires? I just wondered what your thoughts were on the subject?

I've heard it but I'm not sure I believe it. I wouldn't let my kids have them in their college dorms and apartments though.

I lost a friend in a house fire when I was in my early 20s so I am petrified of fires.

I have heard this. I'm not sure which ones or if it's all of them. But, I won't use them because of this.

OR you could buy a bag of yummy smelling Potpurri and sprinkle some in a tea pot filled with water. As the water heats and simmers, the smell permeats the entire house. Just remember to turn it off (or) add water as it evaporates. Cleaner and safer than candles.

I like tea light candles, unscented. I don't like most scented candles. I can only have them on a short time. My eyes water and I have to blow them out.

I've read about this before, but it doesn't pertain to me, or my kiddos... the darn things make our sinuses swell.

This website is a U.S. engineering testing organization that test products to ensure certain types of products meet quality and safety standards.

http://www.ul.com/media/newsrel/nr090204.html Underwriter's Laboratories Inc. is known for years in the U.S. as one of the American national certification agencies for certain building materials, building systems and some consumer products. Other U.S. agencies handle testing and quality certificatioh of products. ULI writes national engineering standards that involve committees of engineeringe experts.

Canada has Underwriters' Laboratories of Canada. But in Canada the air-fresheners might be covered by another national Canadian engineering and testing organization (ie. CSA but doesn't look like it) or the federal govn't.

From your ex-fire protection and engineering librarian.

Yes, I saw the hoax, urban legends internet websites when I did superficial searching.... YOu need to know the agencies that test in a scientific manner and preferably to a standard that covers physical properties of materials.

Thanks, everybody! I love those lilac, Air Wick plug-ins.
But I also use 20 oz. jar candles. I noticed the base of those plug-ins get warm. That was a little unsettling. Methinks, I won't be buying anymore plug-ins. I like potpourri, too. Love the smell of cinnamon, lavender and lilac. LOL...

I have been using Air Wick plug-ins as well for quite some time now as I find them better than aerosols. I switch it on when I get in the house and depending on which room I am going to spend more time in. I leave them plugged in when not in use because my sockets have a safety feature which can switch off current completely.

I've just read the box with my refills. It warns that the plug-ins should not be in "constant" use.

Well Happy Horse Hockey! I just refilled all mine today! LOL

They annoy my allergies, so I don't use them ever.

Someone gave me a strongly scented candle once. Even though I stored it in a closed cabinet, my eyes were still tearing 2 days later, so I sealed the candle in a ziploc bag and put it somewhere in my garage.

In 2095, when I next clean the garage, if I can still find the candle I'll give it away.

Thanks Lola. That's my problem! I don't take the time to read the boxes. Now I'm embarrassed

Happy Horse Hockey? That's an expression I've never heard before. I like it!

Wonder where I'll be in 2095 when the Divine Ms. M cleans her garage???? Hopefull riding on a Heavenly Cloud somewhere!

Both of us, Jabber. I only bothered to read the box when the topic came up. Just unplug it when not in use as a precaution.

Jabber, are you sure you don't want to stick around for my candle? I'll put you first on the list!

I have found one of the best ways to keep the air in your home sweet is to have plenty of plants around. Lots and lots of plants and not silk one either.

Anne, who makes the ones with natural scents? Any idea?

I can't wait until spring when we can throw the windows open and have fresh air throughout the house. WE've been closed up for too long!

Divine Ms. M,
Old, old age is too hard; hope I'm riding on that cloud surrounded by God's love and socializing with the angels.

Chatty,
House plants are great if you're home to care for them. But I RV it a couple times a year. My MIL is elderly and is the only one I could count on to water them. So I replaced them all with artificial arrangements. People ask if they're real; therefore, guess they fit the bill. I love live plants. But I'm at the stage in life where I don't want anything I have to cater to other than a puppy and hubby.

Lola
My number one problem is a shortage of time. I should read the instructions to everything but don't.

Dotsie,
I love having the windows open, too.

Hugs all around....

Jabber,
Happy Horse Hocky, was actually an old phrase I learned from a BF that was a bull dogger/steer wresstler.
I hazed for him...the total effect of the phrase comes when pronounced properly as "Happy Horse S#!t". LOL
