Interesting new hobby..felting

Interesting new hobby..felting - 05/04/10 08:55 AM

I visited a shop at the weekend where fibre classes are on offer.Felted crafts and a multitude of creative projects using yarn and fleece from sheep.
I bought some fleece from Wenslydale sheep to felt.A process explained in a handout. My idea is to make a cobweb fine scarf to fill the V in many of the sweaters I have.
Another idea is to place random felted shapes on chiffon and work the felting process.
I already have two felt brooches bought at craft fairs. This is on my wish/plan list.Making some jewellry.
For some time I have been seeking a creative purpose. This way I have gifts...can fund raise and develope a new skill.
All the workshop are booked until June..but I intend having some tuition..
wall hangings...hats even slippers were all on display..
I am a happy bunny.

I've never heard of this and I'm having trouble visualizing it. I looked it up on the internet and have to ask...is this something like the projects you are referring?

While I don't like the bracelet, the other items are so pretty!

Similar..but the chiffon with applied toning patterns welded on using the process was beautiful..looked up utube and many videos there showing needle felting..for this we need a special needle and foam backing block..mostly I was attracted to the shades that the fibres are dyed..from nature and very artistic

I so agree with you Eunice...my hobby might seem silly to others..but it gives me such enormous pleasure..gets me out in the fresh air, allows me to help keep the beach clean ...but all of that aside...each little shard of glass I pick up to me is a thing of rare beauty...a treasure...some day all of these little treasures combined will make a beautiful backsplash in my kitchen...something to look forward to...:)

Good luck with your new hobby...enjoy yourself...and I anxiously await pictures of the fruits of your labor my friend...

An interest is so individual and takes our life experience into task in deciding.so your glass is your answer.I feel each piece will be like a treasure. The moon causing the tides representing months and years and the big plan that the universe holds.after all what makes a stone or mineral precious?
The pacing of gathering your glass and the final project is self driven by your hand only.

I will be working the creamy yarn very soon.involved is bubble wrap...soapy water My instruction sheet and my hands.

remininscent of nursery class in school...he! he!

I've seen some neat felt art, MA. There's a fibre arts and supplies store in our area that has a goldmine of dyes, books, wools, materials, etc.

Re: Interesting new hobby..felting - 05/07/10 06:49 PM

Ok MA..now I think I know what felt is. We use it here to illustrate stories for the children..and we have a felt board on which to put the figures as we read the story. Am I on the right track? Remember that I work with children from many cultures..and languages in their homes.

I do love sea glass tho. I used to collect as a girl when I lived near Boston..and the ocean..which I miss so much!!!!

Hobbies..yes..hobbies..I am playing a shooting computer game called Doom 2. It is very old..say the pros..but they treat me with respect. I mean..I am pretty old,too..relatively speaking. But it relaxes me..gets some agression and tension out of me..and YES..I am very very aware of the fact that it is a game..and I donīt plan to incorporate this into real life. I shoot zombies in this game..so itīs very fantasy like or whatever..I can paly as long as I want..and then just shut it off..almost taking a drink..or a walk..or whatever..and winding down... smile

What other hobbies are out there??? Or just continue where you left off ladies..this is interesting.

Occasionally at craft fairs (although not that often) I see booths which sell felted hats, purses, or house slippers. Felted flower pins.

There are so many possibilities. It seems like a neat hobby to learn. Yes, I too would love to see what you've made!

Re: Interesting new hobby..felting - 06/07/10 08:21 PM

Hi Mountain Ash,

I am so glad I happened onto this discussion. I have a friend who has made me several delightful felted pieces. The one I treasure the most is a small felted bowl, which I keep on my dresser to hold "stuff." It is multiple shades of red and had feathers on it.

As I understand the process, she probably crocheted the bowl, then processed it in hot water to cause it to become felted. This, however, would be totally different than the samples JJ showed, which appear to be flat pieces (possibly turned into decorative pins) which are merely created from the felt you can buy in craft stores...

Both are lovely, but which type of felting are you doing?

Re: Interesting new hobby..felting - 06/08/10 12:36 AM

You could crochet them out of wire, Chatty. I've seen lots of stuff like that. There is fine gauge wire made just for crochet. I've never tried it myself. Or go to a thrift store or fabric store and find little pink flower buttons.

Re: Interesting new hobby..felting - 06/08/10 08:21 AM

Hi Anne
yes little bowls are made .saw them in the shop.
there are several ways of felting..will enjoy experimenting.some people use a hot wash in the washing machine to thicken woolen items..then embelish the item/garment.
My supplies are like a treasure chest..I have what is called pre felt..its special fibre which can be crafted into anything...scarves bowls flowers wall hangings beads..using colours that blend and match you can build a unique piece of cloth or art.
The master classes that run are for all levels..I intend to make a hat..but that will be nearer winter..this is done working round an inflatable ball ..using the pre felt as I explained.A bowl would be similar..jewellrey is another way to go.Beads can be constucted which when added with ceramic and glass beads look quirky..
what I have been doing is needle felting..where I add design on to a garment..in my case a long cardigan and berets..I choose to do pansies. Needle felting is adding wool or pre felt in chosen shapes and by pricking with a special barbed needle into a special cushion a layer is intoduced..
its prototype time here..
Art students at textile college have been doing this for years its only now coming into the public domain here.
I enjoy it..have been seeking a niche and knew this was it on the first day..I was at the shop at the weekend and saw yet more.
been very busy gardening but will sit down soon to work away an for an hour or two..

Sounds like such a creative hobby. Can't wait to hear as it progresses. I believe I've seen this at craft shows but will have to pay closer attention from now on; now that I have a friend who's doing it. Maybe you'll post pictures...
