review gig

review gig - 03/04/05 09:32 PM

Hello friends, I got a good gig: The church I attend (Unity, also known as Unity School of Christianity) needed a reviewer for their book store. Of course, no pay is involved except for my bio at the end of each review, referring to my book (good enough for me.) In 1982, when reading Unity literature, I said to myself, "someday I'm going to write for Unity." Lo and behold, it may only be reviews, but in the broad sense, I am writing for Unity! My question is this: What web sites are available to see a good format for reviews, or the elements of reviews? Any suggestions? Love and Light, Lynn

Lynn, I've hunted up some sites that have book reviews, both Christian and not. I hope these sites give you examples you can work with.

P.S. Congrats on the review gig!

Lynn, I do tons of reviews for several online sites, including Midwest Book Reviews, Bookpleasures.com, Ministry in Motion, Christian Book Previews, Fiction Addiction and Writesr Crossing. I also post them on Amazon. If you would care to take a look at mine, I've got them formatted to include a bit about the author, a brief synopsis of the book, the intended audience, what I like and don't like, life application, etc. Most of them are on my website, though I have about eight more to add:

Hope that helps.

Thank you dian and vicki. I will check out the sites next. Dian, I think I mentioned to you that I sent a copy of my book to James Cox of Midwest Book Reviews. I followed the instructions to gaining a review to the letter, but got no response. That was before I learned that I did not have to send review copies from my own box, that Authorhouse sends review copies directly when requested, and that costs me nothing. Hmmm...Anyway, off to check out reviews! Love and Light, Lynn

Dian, in case you should know, the link directly to your reviews did not work. I'll try another avenue. LLL

Thanks, Lynn - I fixed my link

About Midwest Book Reviews - the way it works for me with Midwest is that I send in reviews of books I read here - he doesn't send them out. BookPleasures, however, sends tons of emails to the staff of reviewers with new books, then we contact the publisher directly and the book is then mailed to our home/office address. I haven't a clue what Cox does. I would hope he reads the books, and I don't have any evidence that he doesn't. It's possible he assigns them to other reviewers.

It's best practice to have the publisher send the book directly unless you are in charge of most of your publicity, and then you may contact a reviewer and send the copy yourself.

Congrats, Lynn on the gig. You're one step closer to your desire. I too, attend Unity here in Atlanta.
