Good posture-still fashionable, conscious effort?

Good posture-still fashionable, conscious effort? - 06/02/07 10:57 PM

Maybe it's just me...but is good standing and sitting posture still considered a conscious good habit/fashionable/cool among young people? I see so much bad posture among the young...and think,...there's going to be back pain soon unless they fix themselves consciously with exercise...and good posture.

I don't think computers, laptops, etc. is helping the situation among the young either.

I feel this new young adult generation is a poor representation of the human race in so many fashions. There are some good ones, but unfortunately they are not the norm...Nothing matters to them but FUN, and posture doesn't fall into that catergory!!

I noticed last week, my partner's 29-yr. old daughter had some bad posture problems. I mean really slumping and she was diagnosed with a minor S curve back problem when she was a child. She is lovely lady that looks after her weight...but aside from walking dog, she is not doing any exercises to offset some near future problems.

By the way, my posture isn't perfect either ....I have to consciously straighten my body or exercise it.

The kids I work with openly sit there and discuss their drug habits. They even discuss it with the supervisors. They slouch, come to work looking like something the cat dragged in and brag about how drunk they got the night before.

These are college students...the future of our country.

My nephew and his girlfriend, both in their early twenties, are 4th degree black belts and have perfect posture. But then their lives are about being atheletes.

Yes, many young adults slouch and many dress sloppy, but they are young and finding themselves. I choose to remain optimistic and know that they will leave their sloppy ways behind. After all, when I was in my 20s I wore jeans with holes and patches, t-shirts and had long, long hair. I turned out okay.

Amazingly in gr. 8, our school had a posture contest...for girls and boys. I'm not kiddin'.

And the girl who won one year, sat behind me in class. She was 5'10" and did have wonderful naturally straight posture.

It did raise some awareness about good posture.

I have a herniated disk, spinal stenosis and a hemangioma tumor on my spine. Could this be related to bad posture-always tried to stand up straight but I don't know.

Hey orchid, I was Posture Queen in 5th grade! I sat up so straight for weeks, hoping to win the prize. You should see me now, sitting crooked in my office chair, legs crossed - not good posture now!

I have seen a new trend with girls realizing that standing up straight makes them look skinnier/more toned. Hopefully things like that will help renew the trend again. As someone who is only 5 feet tall, I always try to stand as tall as possible.

Chocoholic, me too! I'm 5'3" and believe me, I count those 3 inches. I have to sit tall at my desk or they count me absent..lol

I thought I was so angelic that I was growing wings then I realized it was my shoulder blades turning out instead of in from sitting hunched over my desk.

Orchid, I remember that when I was in 8th grade or so, the "cool" kids would gather behind a certain building at the shopping mall, slouch and grind their butts into the wall, and then smoke. I always thought they looked so stupid! But bad posture has always been with us. Kids especially develop certain stances that they think are cool (Confession: I used to stand with one hip thrust way up! -- hand on hip.) When you're a teen, your body is so much more flexible, so the stupid posture stances probably don't do much damage. Thankfully I outgrew that phase by the time I was 16 or 17.
