Resolutions for the new year! - 01/08/03 01:15 AM

Television shows, newspapers, and online news have been touting many resolutions for the new year. I haven't spent time completing one article, or completely listening to one newscast, but I have noticed that most of them have to do with our bodies! Are we Americans so self-centered that we can't come up with resolutions that could benefit others rather than ourselves...or are most of us boomers, bursting out of our clothes? Hmmmm!

I saw that this didn't have a reply and thought I would give it one. Why do we always look to the outside or superficial when we think of improvements rather than to the inside like spiritual? Well, I think it has to do with commercialism.

There are tons of products and services for appearnces. How are they going to sell all of these things? By making people feel like they have to do something about the way they look.

The other reason has to do with our society likes quick fixes. It is much easier to join a gym or drink Slimfast to fell better about yourself than to look at why you feel bad about yourself or why you might have issues with food. The one thing I loved about the Weight Watchers group O was in that it was more like group therapy than just a diet plan. We all sat around and discussed "food issues" rather than appearance stuff. Yes, we congratulated people when they would come in with their size 6 jeans, but we also had to look at the why and make sure we were doing this for ourselves and no on else.

As far as resolutions go, while it is a little late in the game, you could resolve to do something for yourself like I will not get on the scale more than once a week. Or I will not feel guilty about eating a piece of cake. These types of resolutions will be good for your mind, which effects the body anyway.
