7 deadly sins - 01/03/09 02:03 AM

I've been watching the series on the History Channel called "The Seven Deadly Sins"
which are not in the Bible but are Christian concepts
in 375AD written by a monk, temptations to the soul:
lust, envy, gluttony, sloth, pride, greed
sorry, I forgot one.
Interesting concepts.

What makes you think these are not in the bible P.L.? I too have been watching. Awhile back there was a murder movie with Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman about a maniac killing people he felt committed these seven sins. It was a one word title and for the life of me, I can't remember it, sorry!

The History Channel puts out interesting documentaries but can, at times, be short in the exercise of due diligence with their research. Especially with matters of faith. The Bible does refer to the seven capital sins albeit it does not present them in list form.

Pride - 1 John 2:16
Greed - Exodus 20:17
Envy - Job 5:2 Romans 1:29
Anger - Matthew 5:22
Lust - Matthew 5:28
Gluttony - Proverbs 23:1-2
Sloth - Matthew 25:26-29

DH and I have been watching the series too. We did, however, miss the first show about Lust. Could it be we were being "lustful?" blush Okay ... that was my attempt at humor. Tonight we'll be tuning into "Anger" and tomorrow it's "Pride."

I could be mis-interpreting History channels introduction of each section. I'll listen more carefully as to exactly what they say about the Bible, the monk, and the evolution of the behavior defined as deadly sins. When you remember the title of the movie, please let me know. Lola, thanks for posting where to find the Bible references.

What would even pre-date the Bible and where all 7 can be found are in the Ten Commandments, Lynn. So, given its Judaic roots, the theology behind the seven capital sins cannot even be claimed as a Christian concept.

It would be interesting to watch the show if and when I can manage to from here.

Thoughts and prayers for you, your Mom and Gran.

LOL!!! That really cracked me up, NYW. Lust was one of those 7 I could have been stoned for when I was newly wed. Moderation was not a word in our dictionary then. LOL!!! blush

I've been watching this series too and it does claim the 7 Deadly Sins were listed and named as "deadly" by a pope in 390 AD(which actually started as 8 in the monk's list).

The Rabbi that has been part of the commentary talks about which ones are, and are not, included as sins in the Jewish faith. If memory serves (no guarantees there!), he says at least a couple of them are not...at least directly.

I too got a great big laugh out that one NYW! Too funny and love it bunches. I think my DH would prefer that be the case at all times!

CHATTIE it was just called seven lol

that was the title of the movie, prettie grim regarding the murders not sure i finished watching it but intresting concept.

saw paradigme with the saw movies his victums are those that don't appriate life enough so he near kills them but they can live if they solve some puzzle, hence appriating life all the more. bit extrteem too prove a point.

anyway back to real topic and not movie cofe house psychologie smile

SEVEN, thats right. Thanks Celtic. It was about a serial killer, that killed people that committed the seven deadly sins, one by one he killed them. It was a gruesome but really good murder mystery.

I'm having enough trouble with real life. If no one has seen a
DVD entitled "Facing the Giants," I would like to recommend
it to you. WB and I watched it yesterday afternoon. And
it was just what the doctor "God" ordered. It really lifted
my spirit. And let me tell you, my spirit needed lifting.
This is an outstanding film. It's a bit slow in the beginning,
but when it picks up, it picks up! Groovy lent it to me. She
knows the Giants I'm facing in everyday life. Thank you, Groovy. And thank you God for sending her to me. Luv and prayers and
blessing to all my boomer friends!

Where is groovy?

Is that available at Red Box or BlockBuster?

Re: 7 deadly sins - 04/25/09 03:58 PM

Groovy,
She is focused on personal problems at the moment. It would
be great, if those who are so inclinded, would add her to their prayer list. When I see her, I'll ask where she got that
film. It's a spirit lifter!

Re: 7 deadly sins - 04/26/09 01:54 PM

I had to edit my post about the DVD: the title is, Facing The
Giants, and it can be purchased on christianbook.com! That film
is 1 of 3 along the same line: The next is "Flywheel"; it's by
the same creators of Facing the Giants. The 3rd is something about fire with that young actor from Growing Pains, I think.
Groovy says christianbook is the largest christian bookstore
on the web. Zig Ziglar says these DVD's are "Entertainment that packs a message right where we all live and work."

Re: 7 deadly sins - 04/27/09 01:25 PM

Kirk Cameron is the name I could not come up with yesterday.
And "Fireproof" is the third DVD in this series evangelistic
movies. I enjoyed "Facing the Giants"; will let you know how
I like the next two. Prayers and blessings,

This title cracks me up: 7 deadly sins. The Bible says all
sin is deadly: i.e., the cost of sin is death. Right?

Re: 7 deadly sins - 04/28/09 01:45 PM

Why is it that serial killers don't look the part. Ted Bundy
didn't look like a bad guy. That college kid they arrested
recently, looks like an ordinary dude. Many of 'em look like
regular folk; that's what so scary!

Re: 7 deadly sins - 04/28/09 01:52 PM

You're right, jabber; serial killers look like ordinary people. But there is no set look; remember, this is all going on inside these folks' heads. Even though they are profoundly disturbed, they may be able to function quite well as a 'normal' person and do what they do afterhours. We have all seen too many movies and think these guys -- nearly all men -- look like monsters. They don't, and it's scary.

I don't think it's useful to regard every man as a potential serial killer, but we all should remember that just because people seem nice doesn't mean they are. In fact, some of the best scams are perpetrated by people who pretend to be nice Christians -- and people fall for it because they believe nobody could sound that nice while they're reaching for your wallet. (I friend of mine's father got taken for several thousand dollars by people doing just this. Thank goodness his daughters moved quickly to shore up his finances. He was furious at first, but eventually got what they were saying.)

Ellemm, we also have to be careful online! That is a whole new dimension to where serial killers can hang out.

The name of the movie is "Seven," with yes, Bratt Pitt and Morgan Freeman.
Very graphic violence.

Re: 7 deadly sins - 05/01/09 02:10 PM

the violense was a bit over the top for my tast but thats one of the things that has me rembering the movie years later. each of the 7 biggies was a torture horrow assosiated with the 7 ..

jabber yea it get a bit confusing with all the grades of sin we can get at times,
7 dedlie/all sin leadds to death
mortal and immortale

i just plumpe for personal responsibility and making amends to the living people with sorrys and changies of behaviour, for thos i hurted or wronged.
