A MOTHER'S DAY POEM...
Honoring an adoptive mother

Mother's Day will soon be here,
A few more hours; it shall appear,
What's left to say that hasn't been said,
What haven't you seen, what haven't you read.

If your momma's in Heaven, like me you may wish,
She were here to love, to hug and to kiss.
Or, perhaps, like so much, way back in the day,
Words of love were unspoken or rather hard to say.

And though dear mother is with God up above,
She's still in my heart, still very much loved.
One of these days I'll be there, too,
Then she'll know my love is forever true.

And for the precious mothers here on earth,
May children always honor your value 'n worth.

HAPPY FATHER'S DAY
To my adoptive dad

One of the greatest fathers,
Any child ever had,
'Twas a soil-tilling man,
A dairy farmer, dad.

Such a tender-hearted guy,
And total joy to know,
Had character of excellence,
Folks' far 'n wide, said so.

Thank you God for a father this fine,
Magically molded by Thy masterful mind,
Wise 'n protective, loyal 'n grand,
Hard to describe such an awesome man.

JULY 4th

Happy Independence Day,
Honoring soldiers' we doth see,
Americans' waving national flags,
As military keeps 'em free.

America's forestry 'n parks,
Vast landscapes to adore,
Waterfalls 'n canyons, spark,
Delight in all who explore.

Countrywide celebrations,
Express a blessed 4th of July,
Men and women in commemoration,
'Tis an awesome reason why.

SUMMERTIME IS PRECIOUS

A dainty hummingbird hovers,
On the red feeder tied up high,
Drinking its' weight in nectar,
While I in awe doth spy.

Twin fawns with whitetails wagging,
Joyfully leap through fields of hay,
But their momma is closely watching,
So her offspring don't faraway stray.

Adult geese and yellow goslings,
Are waddling along in a row,
Momma, then babies, then poppa,
Pond-to-pond they happily go.

Backyard Weeping Willows,
Are billowing elegantly,
Thin leaves on sweeping branches,
Are cascading gracefully.

Killdeer are spastically whaling,
Wanting predators to stay away,
With eggs 'n nest at ground level,
All dangers they must keep at bay.

Flowers the color of rainbows,
Surround birdbath facing the road,
Oh, how I love the summertime,
Forever proclaiming its glow!

RUBY FALLS & ROCK CITY

Ruby Falls and Rock City,
Are so in love, it's a doggone pity.

'Cause Ruby's husband is Byers Blue,
'N Rock is wed to Maggie Drew.

If only they'd met, 'fore meeting others,
There'd be no need for forbidden lovers.

No need fer duckin' in-'n-out o' bars,
Or lovin' like teens on the back seat of cars.

Georgia to Tennessee, they rendezvous like crazy,
He says, "There we'll meet"; she says, "Fine with me."

Alco, Athens, Benton Station, Birchwood, too,
Cades Cove, Chattanooga 'n Chattooga, they flew.

Doltewah, Englewood, Etowah 'n Lair,
Lover's Leap, Lookout Mountain, 'n Lower Bon Air.

Ocoee, Pond Hill, Powells' 'n Sale Creek,
Where strangers' know not their reddened cheeks.

These last two have been going through my thoughts for years. Just never took the time to type 'em up. The Ruby & Rock theme is meant to be funny.

I did read somewhere that a couple songwriters' paid tribute to Ruby Falls.

They're both delightful, Jabber. I especially love the Ruby and Rock one, because you used so many fun names of little towns. I've always loved the pure Americana of those names.

Thank you. It makes me happy to know you like them. I do stuff off the top of my head and then second-guess myself, afraid others' won't enjoy 'em. And that's my intention: To make folks' smile a little.

Thanksgiving 2014

This morning I spent time writing a poem of thanks,
Hit the wrong key 'n got a full page of blanks.

But not showing gratitude, seems like a crime,
So I'll try again, in hopes of not wasting time.

Why am I thankful this Thanksgiving Day,
Because of a great God to whom I can pray.

And a husband who's gentle, smart, faithful 'n true,
Plus I'm born in America, loving red, white 'n blue.

I'm thankful for parents who gave me their all,
Lacking nothing, with folks' at my beckon call.

I'm thankful for neighbors and a wonderful home,
And for the RV, when we're longing to roam.

I'm thankful for dogs and the love that they share,
And for electronic friends, here and everywhere.
