Thats how many posts since you last visited the thread...I've just learned that if I open up the section and then refresh the main page, I can then see any new posts. Since I'm new...before I did that...each section showed sometimes hundreds of unread posts so it was difficult to tell when there was a recent one.

You don't have to read each post in the section...just open it up and then refresh the new page...then you can see whenever a new post is available...hope that helps!
