Boomer Womens' World
December 2007

Dear Dotsie,

"Appreciation can make a day, even change a life. Your willingness to put it into words is all that is necessary" ---Margaret Cousins

Greetings,

It's that time of year when I begin reflecting about the past year and planning for the next. I'm taking my mental, physical and spiritual health into consideration and trying to figure out the best way for this boomer babe to stay healthy. Sound familiar?

I'm also wondering how I can be a good wife to my midlife man, parent kids who no longer live at home (and a boomerang who does), spend more time with Dad who is slowing down, and stay connected to other family members and friends.

Then of course, there's work. How can I grow the association and offer superb educational and powerful opportunities to help all of you do what I'm trying to do? I hope to cut the learning curve a bit for all of us by creating an educational schedule that will benefit all areas of boomer women's lives.

By the grace of God, there are many of you who have helped and will continue to help us with this mission. Upon reflection, I have much to be thankful for. And looking at the goals for the NABBW, all of us have much to look forward to.

May you take some time this month to reflect, give thanks, plan, and look forward to the new year with anticipation and excitement. Have a blessed Christmas season, and if you don't celebrate Christmas, may you enjoy celebrating life!

Onward with grace,
Dotsie

National Association of Baby Boomer Women
Testimonial!

The NABBW site is not just a "feel good" girlfriend place to visit on the web (although it does do that). It is a powerful tool for connecting and promoting boomer women all over the world - filled with opportunity. Dotsie is one connected woman and someone every Boomer woman should know. As an associate and author on the site, I have had my NABBW articles picked up by national publications many times.

And, when Dotsie put out the invitation extended by Money Magazine to be interviewed for a retirement article - I jumped on it recognizing yet another great opportunity. Long story short, my husband and I were interviewed and we were highlighted in the November 2007 issue. NABBW is the place to be - for connections, education and fun!

Bernadette has developed this gentle, yet challenging exercise program that is sure to produce results. The DVD takes you through a complete workout which strengthens core muscles, sculpts the body and increases flexibility. Tailored to meet the needs of both the beginner and those that exercise regularly, the routine combines the graceful movements of ballet with the fluid movements of pilates to tone and strengthen. The Just B Method, created by Giorgi, was designed with "women over 50 in mind," but is an effective means of exercise for women of all ages and skill levels.

I found it to be a solid workout. Giorgi's soothing manner and voice made for a very pleasant experience. Ballet and Pilates Fusion can be used as a sole means of exercise or to vary your already established exercise program. The no-impact approach is kind to the body. While the stimulating background music played throughout the entire workout was relaxing and rhythmic, I think I would have enjoyed a change up of style at some point to surprise my senses.

However, overall, the Just B Method is a wonderful way to get the "sleek, sexy and strong physique you've always wanted. And the best part is that you can achieve this in your own home.

Is It Simple Forgetfulness Or The Real Thing?

Barbara offers a lovely presentation for those wondering if a loved one is experiencing dementia. Presented professionally with clarity, excellent tone, and instrumental music between segments, you will learn how to discern if a loved one needs medical attention, and if so, how to get the most appropriate care.

Once a diagnosis is made, she then takes you through the next steps by sharing personal examples from her life of caring for her grandmother and mother. Barbara admits she is not a physician, however our best advice is often learned from lay people who have walked a similar path before us. You will learn practical, helpful tools to walk with someone who wants to remain independent and engaged in spite of their mind's activity. Upon completion, you will have a better understanding of dementia, know how to treat someone who is losing their memory, and be able to spend more quality time with them making pleasant memories through their decline.

GREAT GIFTS FOR YOUR AGING LOVED ONE
By Barbara E. Friesner

Finding the perfect gift is challenging under any circumstances but buying for an aging loved one can be particularly difficult. Obviously you want to get them something they want but it really no longer makes sense for you to get them yet another doll for their doll collection or yet another tie because, hopefully at this point, they're getting rid of stuff.

So what do you do?

Think in terms of what they really want but that they may not know they want.

The Danger Season
By Janet Horn

With all the good will and cheer of this season, how can it be a dangerous one? Because it is often the season of "too much." We may party too much, spend too much, drink too much alcohol, smoke too many cigarettes, and of course, eat too much. But this isn't a lecture on moderating all of those activities we overdo every December.

This is about sweets. Sugar. Simple carbs.

(A clarification here: by "sweets" I mean simple carbohydrates only, or those foods that go directly into your bloodstream as sugar, such as cakes, candy, pastries, white breads and ice cream.

Creating Your Healthy Money Mindset
By Sheri McConnell

Your money mindset allows you to dream big and live your passion in this life in three ways.

One: Believing in Abundance

Right now you believe many goals are attainable and many are not. The way we were raised and our current environment dictate our beliefs and unless we are challenged and taught to believe differently, we stay stuck. Today, open up your mind to abundance. Take a financial goal and rewrite it in an abundant mindset. Try to make yourself believe that you can accomplish it even if there is a nagging voice saying "no way!" Then put it where you can see it every day. Whatever you want to accomplish, have, or do. It doesn't matter. Think abundantly and think big for yourself.

Pause, Observe, and Reflect on a Moment in Your Life
By Natalie Caine

"Life's Challenges are not supposed to paralyze you; they're supposed to help you discover who you are." Bernice Johnson Reagon

If you were to make time to venture inward to find a moment in your life, what memory would you visit? What emerges when you close your eyes and scan for something that touched you this year? Something that made you proud of your self, brought a smile? Don't think too long. Just let it surface and then write about it. Who cares how the words fall on the page? Just get it down and then read it out loud to yourself.

Celebrations and Ruminations
By Georgia Richardson, Queen Jaw Jaw

December is such a reflective month. As the year end closes around me, I find myself daydreaming more, and pondering on the events of the past 12 months. Mulling everything over; chewing the cud, meditating, rumin-okay, okay, enough beating of the dead horse. I did find out you can be bad all year and still get presents. How cool is that? Ahem . . .

Every year at this time, I go within. I think about all the work-related events of the past months and I measure my performance on a scale of 1-5. Sometimes I measure up to par then other times, I cheat. Hey, it's MY measuring system.

WORKPLACE LADDER FUEL
By Nan S. Russell

Maybe you received the email offering cash in exchange for testing the Microsoft/AOL email tracking system. Or you heard that theaters were using subliminal advertising to increase sales of popcorn and soft drinks. Maybe it was the "buy one, get one free" Porsche promotion that caught your attention, or the warning that reusing plastic water bottles is unhealthy since components breakdown and are ingested.

The fact that these are all false didn't stop thousands of people from forwarding them, repeating them, or believing them.

The Greatest Gift
By Donna Shepherd

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord. - Romans 6:23 nlt

When my son, Aaron, was a small tyke, his favorite toys were plastic G I. Joe figures. Every day his little red head could be found poring over his collection. After much deliberation, he picked out two to carry- one in each chubby, little hand.

For Christmas, Aaron asked for a specific G. I. Joe. The problem? Every other three-year old in our area wanted the same one. I despaired as Christmas grew closer, and none could be found.

Will Boomers be "Skiers"?
By Jan Cullinane

A new acronym is born - "Skiers" - Boomers who will Spend the Kids' Inheritance. Is this likely to happen? A lot of financial experts think it will. A recent survey found that more than 60% of Boomers plan to give money to their children before they die - perhaps by funding extended family trips, subsidizing an advanced degree, helping offspring purchase a first home, or paying for their grandkids' education. Many Boomers want to see their children (or their children's children) enjoy their money while they are still around, thus having less to leave them after they're gone.

Then, of course, there is the practicality of Boomers making their money last as long as they do.

From the Traveler's Bookshelf
By Carol Sorgen

"Stylish, brutally frank, and sometimes, frankly brutal." That's how LUXE City Guides describes their accordion-pleated travel guides that are just the right size to pop into a pocket or purse. LUXE City Guides, headquartered in Hong Kong, first came out in 2002 with a series on-not surprisingly, Asian cities. Now there are 19 in the series featuring such tourist-friendly locations as Hong Kong, Melbourne, Phuket, Shanghai, Sydney, and most recently Istanbul, Madrid, and Paris.

The recommendations for each city guide are gathered from 25 residents of that particular city, and are then assembled by a local city editor. The publishing editor of LUXE then flies to each city to personally check out each of the final selections, with the yardstick being, "If we loved it, it's in, if it's not, it's not worth it."
