On another thread I related my early days as a cashier, and how my cash register *always* balanced because I *always* counted back my change.

Today I was handed an odd amount of cash. You know how it is, you fish out some coins that you hope will keep you from getting even more coins back in change?

I rang up the sale, entered the amount of cash tendered, and fished the change out of the cash drawer. Then I stared at the change, and stared, and then stared some more.

I couldn't for the life of me count it back. [Eek!]

It was something like "So that's $3.63, .64, .65, .66 (ok, that's the pennies taken care of), and ummmm errrrrr (what the heck do I do with the nickle and the quarter??????????).

Finally the customer and I just gave up, laughed, and decided to accept that the cash register was right.

Anybody got some salt for this hunk of crow I'm having for supper [Confused]

MossPatch, don't be embarassed. Our son who is 20 years old works in a store that sells mainly booze, tobacco products and lottery tickets. He has two separate cash registers. One is specifically for the lottery money. He recites to me how each person tells him what they want in regards to their lottery tickets, "dollar on the wheel, two on two, one lotto play, etc., etc. He said that he has to be fast and get it right. He was even told by customers that they prefer to come to his store to get their tickets. They tell him that people who work in the grocery store are too slow and don't understand what they want.

The point is, he's a young guy and says it can get pretty hectic and confusing adding all that up in his head and giving the right change. He said try doing it with a long line of people waiting who also want other stuff that requires using the second register as well. Most of the time he's the only worker in the store owned by his boss.
